Trypanosoma cruzi proliferate and differentiate inside different compartments of triatomines gut that is the first environment encountered by T. cruzi. Due to its complex life cycle, the parasite is constantly exposed to reactive oxygen species (ROS). We tested the influence of the pro-oxidant molecules H2O2 and the superoxide generator, Paraquat, as well as, metabolism products of the vector, ...

The serodiagnosis of Chagas' disease, a highly prevalent disorder in South American countries, is usually made by the detection of antibodies to Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigote antigen. In this study, we assess the diagnostic performance of the immunofluorescence test with T. cruzi (Y strain) amastigote antigen from an LLC-MK2-infected cell supernatant in comparison with a test with the conventi...

We have measured the nuclear DNA content of the major life cycle stages of Trypanosoma congolense, in two clones of geographically distant origin. We find that nuclear DNA content in epimastigote, mammalian blood-stream and metacyclic forms is constant and that the nuclear DNA contents of the two clones were 0.1 pg and 0.09 pg, respectively.

Inositol phospholipids (IPL) from epimastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi have been investigated by metabolic labelling with [3H]palmitic acid and by GLC-MS analysis of the lipids obtained from non-labelled parasites. The IPL fraction was separated into phosphatidylinositol (PI) and inositol-phosphoceramide subfractions, the latter accounting for 80-85% of the total IPL. The neutral lipids rele...

We review here two unique organelles from Trypanosoma cruzi. One of them is the acidocalcisome, cytoplasmic vacuoles containing a very high Ca2+ concentration and a Ca2+ - H+ translocating ATPase activity, present in all trypanosomatids. The other organelle is the reservosome, site of accumulation of endocytosed macromolecules, very rich in cysteine proteinase, that is present only in epimastig...
