Aim: To isolate and identify in a Chilean population, Enterococcus spp. from root canals with persistent chronic apical periodontitis (CAP) and to investigate the potential correlation between the bacteria and the observed clinical features. Methods: Twenty patients with indication for endodontic retreatment due to persistent CAP were selected. Data from patient general health and dental clinic...

Oritavancin (MIC50/90, 0.03/0.06 to 0.12 μg/ml) had potent activity against linezolid-resistant staphylococci, as well as Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium (oritavancin MIC50/90, 0.015/0.12 μg/ml against both species). All linezolid-resistant isolates were inhibited by oritavancin at ≤0.12 μg/ml. These results confirmed the absence of cross-resistance between linezolid and oritavan...

Resistance to linezolid has been associated with a G2576U mutation in domain V of the 23S rRNA. We analyzed nine clinical isolates of linezolid-resistant enterococci and showed a clear association between the number of 23S rRNA genes containing this mutation and the level of linezolid resistance expressed.

BACKGROUND There is little information available in Chile on the distribution of Enterococcus spp in waste water and its implications in transmission of antibiotic resistance through the water cycle. Enterococcus spp are common in nosocomial infections and may spread antibiotic resistance through the food chain. AIM To determine the presence of antibiotic resistant Enterococcus spp in the sew...

Background: Increasing food consumption outdoors in different societies has raised the risk of transmission of foodborne pathogens as a global health problem. Molecular typing methods such as REP-PCR produced DNA profiles for differentiation and characterization of pathogenic strains. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of molecular fingerprinting method based on repeated sequenc...

a collection of enterococci  spp. (about 96 isolates) were isolated from two iranian raw milk cheeses, namely lighvan and koozeh, and subsequently, identified as enterococcus faecium , enterococcus faecalis , enterococcus durans , enterococcus casseliflavus and enterococcus italicus by 16s rdna sequencing. all of the 96 isolates were subjected to agar-spot and well-diffusion assay in order to d...

The use of fecal streptococci as fecal indicators requires better knowledge of the ecology of these bacteria. We isolated 371 presumptive fecal streptococci from environmental samples--domestic wastewater, forest industry wastewater, contaminated surface and seawater, well water, cow dung, bird droppings, and pristine waters--and clustered them according to their protein profiles in one-dimensi...

The inclusion of molecular methods in the characterization of the novel species Enterococcus horridus necessitated the sequencing and assembly of the genomes of the closely related Enterococcus rotai and Enterococcus silesiacus Sequencing using Illumina technology in combination with optical mapping led to the generation of closed genomes for both isolates.

Enterococcus species were considered as non-pathogenic bacteria until recognized as an important cause of bacterial endocarditis in 1899. During the past decade, there has been a worldwide increase in occurrence of enterococcal infections. Though more than 28 enteroccocal species described, Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium are isolated most frequently. This might be explained by t...
