Verb Phrase (VP) Ellipsis and Pseudogapping have at times been treated as variants of the same process (Kuno 1981, Jayaseelan 1990, 2001, Lasnik 1995, 1999, Johnson 2001). In both cases something verbal is elided. In VP Ellipsis the verb and all of its arguments are elided, while in Pseudogapping, only the verb (and a subset of its arguments) is elided stranding one of its arguments; in both ca...

This article reviews studies that have used experimental methods from psycholinguistics to address questions about the representation of sentences involving ellipsis. Accounts of the structure of ellipsis can be classified based on three choice points in a decision tree. First: does the identity constraint between antecedents and ellipsis sites apply to syntactic or semantic representations? Se...

Acceptability of case ellipsis on focused subjects and objects exhibits clear asymmetry which so far has not received a plausible explanation. Case ellipsis on focused direct objects occurs naturally, whereas case ellipsis on focused transitive subjects is unnatural whether the subject is contrastively focused or not. The main purpose of this paper is to provide experimental evidence that the d...

this paper presents an attempt to analyze the verb phrase ellipsis in persian in terms of the questions of identity and licensing. assuming a minimalist framework for the analysis, it is argued that verb phrase ellipsis in persian is structurally licensed by a governing head which takes vp as its complement, through an algorithm of e(llipsis)-feature deletion at pf. it is also shown that struct...

This paper develops a Case/case-theoretic acco unt for what Merchant (2008) calls voice mism atch in ellipsis constructions of English. Merch ant (ibid.) reports that VP ellipsis as an elision o f smaller size VP allows voice mismatch, but Ps eudogapping and Sluicing as an elision of bigge r size vP/TP do not. However, Tanaka (2011) ar gues against Merchant's dichotomy in voice mis match betwee...

We generalise DSP91]'s treatment of ellipsis to deaccenting and show that the resulting account has three main advantages. First, it predicts the interpretive similarities between ellipsis and deaccenting. Second, it captures the interaction of deaccenting and anaphora. Third, it yields a uniform treatment of sloppy identity and of its interaction with both ellipsis and deaccenting.

The central claim of this dissertation is that an elliptical VP is a proform. This claim has two primary consequences: first, the elliptical VP can have no internal syntactic structure. Second, the interpretation of VP ellipsis must be governed by the same general conditions governing other proforms, such as pronouns. The basic condition governing the interpretation of a proform is that it must...

This paper deals with the underspeciied semantic representation of ellipsis and its resolution. We present an analysis to explain the the distribution of strict and sloppy readings in the interaction of verb phrase ellipsis and anaphora. The analysis is integrated into a framework that enables a uniform and underspeciied treatment of scope, anaphora and VPE. Abstract This paper deals with the u...

We present conditions under which verb phrases are elided based on a corpus of positive and negative examples. Factor that affect verb phrase ellipsis include: the distance between antecedent and ellipsis site, the syntactic relation between antecedent and ellipsis site, and the presence or absence of adjuncts. Building on these results, we examine where in the generation architecture a trainab...

The following terminology will be used. The clause containing the ellipsis (dann besbI£he ieh immer den Peter "then I always -vts# Peter" in ( 1b)) is called ellipsis clause. The constituent --other than dann ("then"), immer ("always") and possibly other particles-that remains expressed in the ellipsis clause is called the remnant (den Peter "the Peter") . The clause from which the elided infor...
