Chronic exposure of the skin to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation induces oxidative stress, which plays a crucial role in the induction of skin cancer. In this study, the effect of dietary feeding and topical application of brown algae polyphenols on UVB radiation-induced skin carcinogenesis in SKH-1 mice was investigated. SKH-1 hairless mice were randomly divided into 9 groups, including control, ...

Urine from mutant mice which lack D-amino-acid oxidase contained a large amount of D-alanine. The alanine content was not changed by changes in the dietary composition or by starvation. However, oral administration of an antibiotic, amoxicillin, decreased the urinary alanine to the normal level. These results suggest that the D-alanine is not of dietary origin but of intestinal bacterial origin.

Elevated levels of the histidine catabolito formiminoglutamic acid were excreted into the urine of rats that were given both 0.01% diethylnitrosamine in their drinking water for 1 to 5 weeks and an injection of a loading dose of histidine. Similar histidine loading of control rats that received no carcinogen did not produce an elevation in urinary formiminoglutamic acid excretion. The elevation...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Previous studies show that endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) plays a prominent role in maintaining cerebral blood flow and preventing stroke. Capsaicin in hot pepper can increase the phosphorylation of eNOS in endothelial cells. We test the hypothesis that chronic dietary capsaicin can prevent stroke through activation of cerebrovascular transient receptor potentia...

Apical ballooning syndrome (ABS) is a unique reversible cardiomyopathy that is frequently precipitated by emotional or physical stress. In addition, the few drugs reported to precipitate ABS were either illegal or strictly controlled for medical use. This paper reports a case of ABS precipitated by a dietary supplement. Our case accentuates the potential risk of dietary supplements containing s...

SCOPE Tetrahydrocurcumin (THC), a major metabolite of curcumin (CUR), has been demonstrated to be anti-cancerogenic and anti-angiogenic and prevents type II diabetes. In this present study, we investigated the chemopreventive effects and underlying molecular mechanisms of dietary administration of CUR and THC in azoxymethane (AOM)-induced colon carcinogenesis in mice. METHODS AND RESULTS All ...

Depending on intended use of a probiotic (drug vs. dietary supplement), regulatory requirements differ greatly.
