Plasma creatinine concentration is superior to creatinine clearance for the detection of abnormal glomerular function, of changes of glomerular function in patients with chronic renal disease. Creatinine clearance should be abandoned as the routine assessment of glomerular function.

Spreadsheets may be created to include the Cockcroft-Gault Formula (CGF) for creatinine-based estimation of glomerular filtration rate. Creatinine clearance (CrCl) provides a more accurate method for perioperative risk assessment of renal function than serum creatinine. CrCl may be used to develop guidelines for renal protective management strategies during cardiopulmonary bypass. CGF uses seru...

Thirteen newborn infants, 8 preterm and 5 term, with either mild or serious neonatal asphyxia were studied. From the first 24 hours of life to day 13, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) estimated by creatinine clearance was compared with the values obtained using Schwartz's formula: GFR (ml/min per 1.73 m2) = 0.55 x length (cm)/plasma creatinine (mg/100 ml). Both in term and preterm infants, valu...

This is the second of two articles that together aim to explore current understanding of the clinical value of measuring serum/plasma urea concentration. The main focus of the first article [1] was physiological topics, such as urea production and renal processing of urea. The causes of increased and reduced plasma/serum urea concentration were also discussed. The main focus of this second arti...
