The roles of the alloying elements Mo, Cr, and W in resisting crevice corrosion of UNS N06022, UNS N06625, and UNS N10362 have been studied under galvanostatic conditions in 5 mol/L NaCl at 150°C. Corrosion damage patterns were investigated using surface analytical techniques such as scanning electron microscopy and optical imaging, and the corrosion products characterized by energy dispersive ...

Metal-on-metal (M-M) joint replacement has raised concerns about the long-term effects of metal wear debris and corrosion products. This review summarizes the current concepts in biological reactivity to metal wear particles, ions, and corrosion products. Attention is focused on Co-Cr-Mo alloy since it is the most diffused and discussed material in arthroplasty.

Metal-on-metal (MoM) bearings have become popular due to a major advantage over metal-on-polymer bearings for total hip arthroplasty in that the larger femoral head and hydrodynamic lubrication of the former reduce the rate of wear. However, concerns remain regarding adverse reactions to metal debris including metallosis caused by metal wear generated at the taper-head interface and another mod...

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of metal primers on the bonding of dental alloys and veneer resin. Polyvinylpyrrolidone solution's tarnish effect on bonding strength was also investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS Disk-shape metal specimens (diameter 8 mm, thickness 1.5 mm) were made from 3 kinds of alloy (Co-Cr, Ti and Au-Ag-Pd alloy) and divided into 4 groups per each ...

The Electron Beam Melting (EBM) manufacturing process is emerging as an additional method for producing orthopaedic devices in several materials, including Co-Cr-Mo Alloy. This work presents the chemical, microstructural and mechanical properties of several test specimens produced by the EBM process before and after a post‐EBM Heat treatment. Comparisons are made to the properties of Co-Cr-Mo m...

The composition of anodically grown oxide films on Alloy 22, a Ni-Cr-Mo(W) alloy, has been investigated in 5mol l 1 NaCl at room temperature using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. For applied potentials up to 0.2 V (vs Ag/AgCl (saturated KCl solution)), a Cr(III) oxide barrier layer develops at the alloy/oxide interface accounting for the exce...

The effects of metal combinations on cytotoxicity were examined following dynamic extraction by freely gyrating two spherical metals in a glass vessel. The cell viabilities of an Au alloy, a Ag-Pd-Au alloy and Ti were little affected by combinations among three metals. Cell viability ranged between 60 and 80% when precious alloys were in combination with Co-Cr or Ni-Cr alloys. Ti showed a clear...
