A case of a 96 year old woman with an incarcerated gallbladder in an epigastric hernia causing acute acalculous cholecystitis is described. At operation the gallbladder was replaced in its anatomical site and the hernia was repaired. This unique case of acute acalculous cholecystitis demonstrates cystic duct obstruction and cystic vessel compression as possible aetiologies for this pathology.

Acute cholecystitis involves inflammation of the gallbladder and can be seen with cholelithiasis (calculous) or in the absence of gallstones (acalculous). Acute acalculous cholecystitis (ACC) is rare, but important cause of cholecystitis in pediatrics. It is estimated that in children, 30–50% of cholecystitis cases are acalculous, compared with 2 to 17% of cases in adult patients. In children A...
Acute cholecystitis is a very rare presentation of brucellosis. A case of acalculous cholecystitis caused by Brucella melitensis is reported with a review of previously reported cases.
This article discussed the diagnosis and management of acute GI bleeding, prophylaxis against GI bleeding, acute pancreatitis, and acalculous cholecystitis. These diseases are commonly encountered in the ICU setting. Acute GI bleeding is usually obvious and with GI and with available interventional radiologic techniques, patients rarely need surgery. Conversely, acalculous cholecystitis is diff...
OBJECTIVE Fatty meal cholescintigraphy (fatty meal CS) is a potential physiologic alternative for cholecystokinin (CCK) CS in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic acalculous cholecystitis (CAC). However, there are limited data in the literature to support this assumption. Our objective was to determine the usefulness of fatty meal CS in the diagnosis and treatment of CAC. METHODS We retrosp...
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES There is currently no consensus with regard to the use of cholecystectomy or percutaneous cholecystostomy as the therapy of choice for acute acalculous cholecystitis. The goal of this study was to review the scientific evidence on the management of these patients according to clinical and radiographic findings. METHODS A systematic review of the literature from 2000 ...
