Aerocyanidin, a new antibiotic containing an isonitrile group, has been isolated from fermentations of Chromobacterium violaceum ATCC 53434. Structure 1 was assigned on the bais of spectroscopic characterization of the antibiotic and of a degradation product that results from treatment with base. The antibiotic is primarily active against Gram-positive bacteria.

The draft genome sequences of two Chromobacterium violaceum strains isolated from the Rio Negro are reported here. These bacteria carry most genetic systems associated with the production of bioactive compounds, but unlike other C. violaceum strains, they lack a dedicated operon for arsenic resistance.

This is the first report of Chromobacterium violaceum strains that are aerogenic. Two pigmented strains of C. violaceum and their nonpigmented variants produced gas in glucose broth.
