Background: High-velocity carbon ion beams represent the most advanced tool for radiotherapy of deep-seated tumors. Currently, the superiority of carbon ion therapy is more prominent on lung cancer or hepatomas. Materials and Methods: The data for lateral straggling and projected range of monoenergetic 290 MeV/u (3.48 GeV) carbon ions in muscle tissue were obtained from the stopping and range o...
We describe the use of reverse Monte Carlo refinement to extract structural information from angle-resolved data of a Bragg peak. Starting with small-angle neutron scattering data, the positional order of an ensemble of flux lines in superconducting Nb is revealed. We discuss the uncovered correlation functions in the light of topical theories, in particular, the "Bragg glass" paradigm.
The simultaneous measurement of two Bragg reflections by coherent X-ray diffraction is demonstrated on a twinned Au crystal, which was prepared the solid-state dewetting 30 nm thin gold film sapphire substrate. crystal oriented goniometer so that lattice planes fulfill condition at same time. 111 and 200 peaks were measured simultaneously scanning energy incident beam recording patterns with tw...
We have successfully prepared anodized alumina membrane distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) using electrochemical anodization method. The transmission peak of this distributed Bragg reflector could be easily and effectively modulated to cover almost any wavelength range of the whole visible spectrum by adjusting anodization temperature.
It is common practice to assume that Bragg scattering peaks have Gaussian shape. The Gaussian shape function is used to perform most instrumental smearing corrections. Using Monte Carlo ray tracing simulation, the resolution of a realistic small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) instrument is generated reliably. Including a single-crystal sample with large d-spacing, Bragg peaks are produced. Bra...
The ripple filter was designed to broaden the Bragg maximum of carbon beams for the raster-scan technique, a special type of tumour-conformal ion beam treatment. In this technique the target volume is divided into individual layers that are treated sequentially by varying the energy from the accelerator stepwise. Because the unmodified Bragg maximum has a small half-width, below 1 mm for small ...
Treating tumors that are subject to intrafractional motion (e.g. lung tumors) with scanned particle beams leads to deterioration of the deposited dose distributions. One possible technique to mitigate motion effects is beam tracking [1]. In case of rotational motion the beam path and thereby the dose deposition in the plateau region proximal of the Bragg peak position changes despite adaptation...
Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors are among the most popular elements for fiber optic sensor networks used for the direct measurement of temperature and strain. Modern FBG interrogation setups measure the FBG spectrum in real-time, and determine the shift of the Bragg wavelength of the FBG in order to estimate the physical parameters. The problem of determining the peak wavelength of the FBG fr...
There are many unknowns in the radiobiology of proton beams and other particle beams. We describe the development and testing of an image-guided low-energy proton system optimized for radiobiological research applications. A 50 MeV proton beam from an existing cyclotron was modified to produce collimated beams (as small as 2 mm in diameter). Ionization chamber and radiochromic film measurements...
Embedded channel waveguide Bragg gratings are fabricated in the Ormocer® hybrid polymers OrmoComp®, OrmoCore, and OrmoClad by employing a single writing step technique based on phase mask technology and KrF excimer laser irradiation. All waveguide Bragg gratings exhibit well-defined reflection peaks within the telecom wavelengths range with peak heights of up to 35 dB and -3 dB-bandwidths of do...
