AIM To investigate the survival benefit of bilateral internal mammary artery (BIMA) grafts in patients with left ventricular dysfunction. METHODS Between 1996 and 2009, we performed elective, isolated, primary, multiple cardiac arterial bypass grafting in 430 consecutive patients with left ventricular ejection fraction ≤ 40%. The early and long-term results were compared between 167 patients ...

PURPOSE Of the 99% maternal deaths that take place in developing countries, one-fourth is due to postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). PPH accounts for one-third of all blood transfusions in Bangladesh where the transfusion process is lengthy as most facilities do not have in-house blood bank facilities. In this context, the location where blood is obtained and the processes of obtaining blood products ...

Neurologic melioidosis is a serious, potentially fatal form of Burkholderia pseudomallei infection. Recently, we reported that a subset of clinical isolates of B. pseudomallei from Australia have heightened virulence and potential for dissemination to the central nervous system. In this study, we demonstrate that this subset has a B. mallei-like sequence variation of the actin-based motility ge...

Burkholderia species use BimA for intracellular actin-based motility. Uniquely, Burkholderia thailandensis BimA harbors a central and acidic (CA) domain. The CA domain was required for actin-based motility, binding to the cellular Arp2/3 complex, and Arp2/3-dependent polymerization of actin monomers. Our data reveal distinct strategies for actin-based motility among Burkholderia species.

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate 17-year actual clinical outcomes of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) using skeletonized versus pedicled bilateral internal mammary arteries (BIMAs). METHODS From September 1991 to June 1996, 548 consecutive patients underwent CABG for multivessel disease using BIMA. After propensity matching, 350 patients were enrolled: 1...

OBJECTIVE(S) We evaluated our experience to investigate if the use of bilateral internal mammary artery (BIMA) grafting, with or without complementary saphenous vein grafts (SVGs), if compared to the use of single IMA and SVG(s), increases the quality of the results of coronary bypass grafting in patients younger than 75 years who undergo first myocardial revascularization. METHODS From Septe...

Introduction The Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) is a financial protection scheme in India. It is aimed at protecting families below poverty line (BPL) against catastrophic health expenses. It also seeks to increase their access to healthcare and expand the choice of providers. We undertook a series of studies in Chhattisgarh to examine: a) the key issues in the design and implementation ...

The Aspergillus nidulans sepI(+) gene has been implicated in the coordination of septation with nuclear division and cell growth. We find that the temperature-sensitive (ts) sepI1 mutation represents a novel allele of bimA(APC3), which encodes a conserved component of the anaphase-promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C). We have characterized the septation, nuclear division, cell-cycle checkpoint d...

The Satellite per Astronomia X (BeppoSAX) is successfully producing small error boxes to gamma-ray bursts, permitting rapid follow-up multiwavelength searches for fading and quiescent counterparts. For GRB 970228 this led to the discovery of the first convincing fading counterpart. However, no counterpart was found for GRB 970111. In this Letter, we present our observations approximately 1 week...
