Bezoars are foreign bodies that form masses in the gastric or intestinal lumen, particularly in mentally retarded or psychiatric patients. Classifications of bezoars are made according to the content of the bezoar, such as trichobezoars (of hairs), phytobezoars (of vegetable fibers), lactobezoars (of milk products), and others containing medications or other foreign materials. Whatever the etio...

We reviewed the histories of four children (2 boys and 2 girls, aged 6 mo to 10 yr) with surgically proven bezoars, treated from 1991 to 1998. Two had gastric bezoars and two had intestinal bezoars. All four patients presented with gastrointestinal symptoms and none had undergone previous surgery. Three had a history of abnormal ingestion, including one who ate a pickled fruit from the Boragina...

BACKGROUND Bezoar-induced small-bowel obstruction (SBO) is an uncommon surgical emergency. Accurate preoperative diagnosis is notoriously difficult, and conventional management often necessitates laparotomy. Recent articles demonstrate the feasibility of laparoscopy in the management of SBO. This study compares the outcomes of a series of cases managed laparoscopically with the outcomes of matc...

We report a rare case of sepsis with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) caused by Candida parapsilosis and Candida famata after a small bowel bezoar operation. The patient was successfully treated with intensive care including mechanical ventilation and systemic antifungal therapy. A strong association was observed between the intestinal obstruction caused by the bezoar and candidemia p...

A Pakistani girl presented with acute abdominal pain and raised serum amylase and alkaline phosphatase concentrations. She was found to have a gastric trichobezoar with a tail extending to the mid-ileum. The altered biochemical parameters returned to normal after surgical removal of the bezoar. Irritation of ampulla of Vater by the bezoar tail is believed to have caused transient pancreatitis.

A seventeen-year-old female presented with a symptomatic abdominal mass that was diagnosed by barium meal and computed tomography to be a gastric bezoar. She underwent laparoscopic removal of the bezoar, through an anterior wall gastrostomy in an endobag, which was extracted piecemeal through a 4-cm upper midline incision. The technique is described with a review of a few previous laparoscopic-...

Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a common condition encountered in surgical practice. Literature shows divers and many different etiologies for intestinal obstruction. However, bezoars are rarely reported as an etiological factor. A bezoar happens most commonly in patients with impaired gastrointestinal motility. There are four types of bezoars: phytobezoars, trichobezoars, pharmacobezoars and ...

BACKGROUND Duodenal obstruction occurs mainly due to physical lesions such as duodenal ulcers or tumors. Obstruction due to bezoars is rare. We describe an extremely rare case of obstruction in the third portion of the duodenum caused by a diospyrobezoar 15 months after laparoscopic distal gastrectomy for early gastric cancer. CASE PRESENTATION A 73-year-old man who underwent laparoscopic dis...

A bezoar is a hard, and solid, foreign body located in the gastrointestinal tract that may recur. Bezoar is classified according to its origin. Pharmacobezoars develop in the gastrointestinal tract due to alterations in anatomical structure and/or intestinal motility. In this paper, a case, not yet defined in the literature, of a pharmacobezoar causing a mechanical obstruction that is accompani...
