BACKGROUND Dietary questionnaire studies have suggested that patients with oesophageal adenocarcinoma are deficient in antioxidants. It is not known whether the same holds true for patients with the precursor lesion, Barrett's oesophagus. AIMS To evaluate the hypothesis that patients with Barrett's oesophagus are deficient in antioxidants compared with patients without evidence of Barrett's o...
: This review discusses the utility and limitations of model gut systems in accurately modelling mucosa digestive tract from both an anatomical functional perspective, with a particular focus on oesophagus upper tract, what this means for effective vitro oesophageal pathology. Disorders include heartburn, dysphagia, eosinophilic oesophagitis, achalasia, spasm gastroesophageal reflux disease. 3D...
Accumulation of p53 protein was determined by immunohistochemistry in archival material of biopsy specimens from 102 patients with Barrett's oesophagus with different grades of dysplasia, in 24 oesophageal adenocarcinomas associated with Barrett's oesophagus, and in 23 cases of metaplastic epithelium adjacent to these carcinomas. Immunostaining for the p53 protein was found in 23/102 (23 per ce...
Barrett's oesophagus is the replacement of normal squamous oesophageal epithelium with an intestinalized columnar epithelium. Although some insight has been gained as to what Barrett's oesophagus is, how this columnar epithelium emerges from within a stratified squamous epithelium remains an unanswered question. We have sought to determine whether oesophageal keratinocytes can be trans-differen...
Acid, a principal component of gastro-oesophageal refluxate, may contribute to the development and malignant progression of Barrett's oesophagus. Oesophageal pH monitoring studies have demonstrated that patients with Barrett's oesophagus have severe and chronic acid reflux. However, there is overlap between the amount of acid exposure in patients with oesophagitis compared with patients with Ba...
Oesophageal adenocarcinoma represents the 6th common cause of cancer related deaths. Frequently oesophageal adenocarcinomas are developed from Barret’s oesophagus, which metaplastic lesion lower third when squamous epithelium is replaced by glandular epithelium. It has been shown, that metaplasia bears risk progression into dysplasia and later malignant disease. However, this different in patie...
Barrett's oesophagus is a preneoplastic condition in which the squamous mucosa of the oesophagus is replaced by columnar epithelium. Epithelial cells of Barrett's oesophagus were isolated from resected oesophagus specimens by two methods not previously applied to the culture of Barrett's oesophagus cells. These techniques included trypsinisation of small fragments of mucosa, followed by plating...
Ten cases of combined corrosive and peptic strictures of the oesophagus have been described. The peptic stricture of the oesophagus occurred 20 to 50 years after the corrosive burn. The authors believe that the hiatal hernia was due to the contraction of the fibrotic wall of the oesophagus, and therefore they prefer to call it a traction hiatal hernia. The operation of choice in these cases is ...
A case of verrucous squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus treated with bleomycin is reported. Bleomycin brought prompt reduction of the tumour and relief of symptoms. There have been no previous reports on experience with anti-cancer agents for verrucous carcinoma of the oesophagus. Administration of bleomycin might be an effective treatment for verrucous carcinoma of the oesophagus.
