Aneurysms of the azygos vein are rare and can sometimes mimic a paratracheal or posterior mediastinal mass. It is important to confirm the diagnosis with radiologic tools before performing invasive procedures, which carry the risk of hemorrhage. Here, we present a case in a 79-year-old asymptomatic patient of an increasing azygos vein aneurysm that mimicked a growing paratracheal mass. Review o...
The azygos vein is the vein that drains the thoracic wall and upper lumbar region. It is the important channel connecting the two venae cavae. Its origin is variable. On developmental grounds it should originate from the posterior surface of the inferior vena cava near the renal veins. This is known as lumbar azygos vein. In the absence of lumbar azygos, it is formed by the union of ascending l...
Azygos vein aneurysm is a rare cause of mediastinal mass. Most cases present as an incidental finding on imaging modalities, but in few cases the thrombosis in the aneurysm leads to pulmonary thromboembolism, which may require surgical resection. We present a case where, for the first time, a case of a complicated azygos vein aneurysm was diagnosed in infancy, which required surgical resection.
OBJECTIVE We intended to prospectively study the technical feasibility and advantages of esophageal anastomosis medial to the preserved azygos vein in neonates diagnosed with esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF). The results were compared to the cases where azygos vein was either not preserved, or the anastomosis was done lateral to the arch of preserved azygos vein. MAT...
Superior mediastinum contains many important vessels and tubes, variation of one may affect the other. Left brachiocephalic vein crosses arch of the aorta and its branches superficially. Arch of the aorta from its convex superior aspect usually provides brachiocephalic, left common carotid and left subclavian artery from the right to left. Left subclavian artery continues as axillary artery and...
The aim of this study was to describe the possible variations in the connection between the internal venous vertebral system and the cranial vena cava in rabbit using corrosion technique. The study was carried out on 40 adult New Zealand white rabbits. The venous system was injected by using Batson's corrosion casting kit number 17. We found the connection between the internal venous vertebral ...
Inferior vena cava (IVC) interruption is a rare condition that might pose difficulties during typical flutter ablation. When azygos vein continuation is present ablation via the femoral route could be performed. In the absence of azygos vein continuation, typical atrial flutter ablation via a superior approach from the SVC is feasible.
The azygos vein may be abnormally situated due to anomalous embryologic development. Its abnormal location is infrequent, but radiologic recognition is much easier than that of the normal vein. This vein, normal or abnormal, becomes distended in conditions with an elevated venous pressure, systemic or portal. Changes in the size of the azygos vein on x-ray are noted to parallel fluctuations of ...

The aim of the study was to examine the variability of the azygos vein system and to determine the location of the veins with reference to the vertebral midline and the skeletopy of their termination. The research material consisted of 32 human foetuses (14 male, 18 female) from 21(st) to 24(th) week of intrauterine life, fixed in 10% neutral formalin solution. Conventional anatomical - radiogr...
