The first leaves (40 millimeters long) of 4-day-old light-grown Avena sativa L. cv Victory I seedlings contained a complete age sequence of cells from the base to the tip, and within these tissues all stages of chloroplast development could be observed. Although chloroplasts underwent progressive development, a marked increase in number of thylakoids per granum, in chloroplast volume, and in ch...
ABSTRACT Crown rust (Puccinia coronata) in indigenous populations of Avena sterilis has been cited as an example of stability of wild pathosystems that consist of natural mixtures of resistance and virulence. This study confirmed that virulence/avirulence polymorphisms in P. coronata on A. sterilis in Israel are highly diverse and that super races do not dominate. Isolates of P. coronata from I...
Recognizing a need in cultivated hexaploid oat (Avena sativa L.) for a reliable set of reference SNPs, we have developed a 6K BeadChip design containing 257 Infinium I and 5,486 Infinium II Page 1 of 32 The Plant Genome Accepted paper, posted 06/19/2014. doi:10.3835/plantgenome2014.03.0010
Fructan was precipitated from a water and ethanol extract of oat (Avena sativa L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). The degree of polymerization and response on a differential refractometer, based on peak area and height, was compared to fructan collected from a lead-based HPLC column and to commercially available inulin. Statistically significant differences are discussed.
Introduction: Wild oat has become an invasive and economically important weedy species in most cereal growing areas of the world, including the Red River Valley of Minnesota and North Dakota. Approximately 79% of the wheat and 72% of barley acres seeded in northwestern Minnesota are infested with wild oat. In the past, wild oat has been effectively controlled with herbicides, and as a result li...
It has been reported recently that coleoptiles of Zea mays develop a geotropic response under anaerobic conditions (2). The geotropic response of a coleoptile arises from the differential growth of the upper and lower halves of the organ. At least 3 independent investigations have shown that in Avena sativa coleoptiles growth is totally arrested in the absence of 02 (1,6, 9). It is therefore di...

The Pyricularia genus includes several pathogenic fungi species that are associated with blast disease in more than 50 Poaceae plants (Ou 1985). Among these species, Pyricularia oryzae is the most important pathogen, due to its global distribution on plants from the Poaceae family. The blast disease caused by P. oryzae is responsible for severe losses in crops of high economic importance such a...
Background & Aims : Man in all historical periods had to use domestic and medicine herbal plants. Over the last half century, the use of synthetic and chemical drugs is highly prevalent. The harmful effect of chemical drugs on human life has increased the tendency to use medicinal plants once more. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Avena sativa active ingredients on the w...
