The efficacy and safety of surgical intervention for atrial myxoma are established, but the operative approach to tumor resection and atrial reconstruction are controversial. A biatrial approach is generally used for excision of atrial myxoma and has many advantages. In contrast, there are a few reports about the method of double-patch reconstruction, and the right and left atrium are individua...
A 59-year-old woman with a left atrial myxoma was shown to have moderate aortic regurgitation. At operation for removal of the myxoma it was found to be attached to the atrial septum close to the aortic root. It is suggested that the aortic regurgitation was caused by distortion of the aortic root caused by traction upon it from the myxoma as it moved downward into the left ventricle in diastol...
A myxoma is the most common primary tumor of the heart. It has been reported as the source of a cardiogenic embolism. Therefore, it is important for clinicians to detect the myxoma early via echocardiography to prevent complications, such as syncope, sudden death, and cerebral embolic ischemic stroke. This report presents the case of a 54-year-old female whose clinical manifestation of atrial m...
Arial myxoma can present as stroke and should be considered as a differential diagnosis of stroke in young individuals. We present here a 42 years female who presented with sudden loss of conciousness. After extensive work up for young stroke, left atrial myxoma was detected and tumor was removed surgically and histopathological report was consistent with the atrial myxoma.
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness and safety of thoracoscopic surgery and traditional median sternotomy. PATIENTS AND METHODS 64 patients with atrial myxoma and 114 patients with atrial septal defect were collected from Mar 2012 to Aug 2015. 40 atrial myxoma and 77 atrial septal defect (ASD) patients underwent totally thoracoscopic surgery technique, while 24...
Intracardiac myxoma is the most frequent benign tumour of the heart. Although most (75%) are located in the left atrium (LA), myxomas are also found in the right atrium (18%), right ventricle (4%), and left ventricle (3%).They occur in all age groups, most frequently between third and sixth decade, while it is rare in the ninth decade [1,2]. Left atrial myxoma(LAM) is histologically benign and ...
Left atrial myxomas are the most common type of benign primary cardiac tumor. Patients can present with generalized symptoms, such as fatigue, symptoms from obstruction of the myxoma, or even embolization of the myxoma causing distal thrombosis. We describe a case with several-month duration of syncopal episodes that occurred after coughing and with exertion. Computed tomography of the chest sh...
BACKGROUND Atrial myxoma is an uncommon cause of hemiplegia in children. However hemiplegia is the commonest manifestation of atrial myxoma in the paediatric age group. CASE REPORT An 11-year-old girl presented with left hemiplegia and palpitations. Three months later she had a deepvein thrombosis of the right common iliac vein. MRI of the brain showed a subacute right thalamic infarct, and a...
Cerebral infarctions of cardiac etiology are observed in around 20% of patients with ischemic stroke. Cerebral ischemia is the first clinical manifestation in 1/3 of cases of atrial myxomas. Although almost half of patients with atrial myxoma show changes at neurological exam, non-hemorrhagic cerebral infarction is seen in computed tomography in practically all cases. We present the case of a 4...
The neurological complications secondary to embolism from atrial myxoma are reviewed. A patient with intracranial and skeletal metastases is described to emphasise the malignant potentiality of this tumour. A classification of atrial myxoma metastases is presented.
