Bile-salt-dependent lipase (BSDL; EC 3.1.1.13) is an enzyme expressed by the pancreatic acinar cell and secreted as a component of the pancreatic juice. During its route towards secretion, BSDL is associated with intracellular membranes by means of a multiprotein folding complex, which includes the glucose-regulated protein of 94 kDa (Grp94). We have postulated that the association of BSDL with...

[1] IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) AR4 (Fourth Assessment Report) GCMs (General Circulation Models) predict a tropical tropospheric warming that increases with height, reaches its maximum at ∼200 hPa, and decreases to zero near the tropical tropopause. This study examines the GCM‐predicted maximum warming in the tropical upper troposphere using satellite MSU (microwave soundin...

Pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor was examined for growth-promoting activity on five cell lines using standard cell culture techniques. One cell line, AR4-2J, derived from a rat pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma, responded with significantly increased incorporation of [3H]thymidine and colony formation. Pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor stimulated the incorporation of [3H]thymidine in ...

A major gap in predictive capability concerning the future evolution of the ice sheets was identified in the Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. As a consequence, it has been suggested that the AR4 estimates of future sea-level rise from this source may have been underestimated. Various approaches for addressing this problem have been tried, includin...

“Earth Science for Society” is the tagline for the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE). This joint initiative by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the International Union of Geological Sciences, aims to promote the activities of Earth scientists and encourage effective use of their knowledge by society. The fourth assessment report (AR4) of ...

Methyloferula stellata AR4 is an aerobic acidophilic methanotroph, which, in contrast to most known methanotrophs but similar to Methylocella spp., possesses only a soluble methane monooxygenase. However, it differs from Methylocella spp. by its inability to grow on multicarbon substrates. Here, we report the draft genome sequence of this bacterium.

Treatment of the rat pancreatic acinar cell line AR4-2J with the calcium ionophore A23187 selectively increases, within a few hours, the steady-state level of trypsin mRNA. Addition of the tumor-promoting phorbol ester phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate potentiates the calcium-induced increase. The mRNA level of the other tested exocrine pancreatic genes decreases. These results were confirmed by ...

Bone cells (osteoblasts) produce a collagen-rich matrix called osteoid, which is mineralized extracellularly by nanosized calcium phosphate (CaP). Synthetically produced CaP nanoparticles (NPs) have great potential for clinical application. However few studies have compared the effect of CaP NPs with different properties, such as shape and aspect ratio, on the survival and behaviour of active b...

Type I, II, and III inositol-1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP3) receptors are expressed selectively in different cell lines and tissues. We examined whether type I, II, and III InsP3 receptors differ in ligand-binding affinity and whether such differences influence the sensitivity of Ca2+ stores to InsP3. Initially, SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells, AR4-2J rat pancreatoma cells, and RINm5F rat insuli...

We provide complete circularized genome sequences of two mosquito-derived Elizabethkingia anophelis strains with draft sequences currently in the public domain (R26 and Ag1), and two novel E. anophelis strains derived from a different mosquito species, Anopheles sinensis (AR4-6 and AR6-8). The genetic similarity of all four mosquito-derived strains is remarkable.
