Abstract Injection-related infections require prolonged antibiotic therapy. Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) has been shown to be feasible for people who inject drugs (PWID) in some settings. We report a national survey on practice patterns and attitudes of infectious diseases (ID) clinicians the U.S. regarding use OPAT PWID.

We report the first description of recurrent bacteremia in two patients after cyanoacrylate injection for gastric varices bleeding treated with antibiotics alone. Adapted and prolonged antibiotic treatment allowed a complete resolution of the infection with no relapse after more than 6 months. According to recent data, prophylactic antibiotics should be further investigated for patients with bl...

The penetration of gentamicin into human aqueous was measured after intensive drops or subconjunctival injection of the antibiotic. The drop regimen proved ineffective in producing a therapeutically effective level. After a single 40 mg subconjunctival injection an effective concentration was achieved in 2 hours and maintained for 24 hours. The significance of these findings is discussed with r...

Succinate was the major organic acid detected in the hindgut content of pigs suffering from antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Antibiotic-associated diarrhea was induced by an oral dose of polymyxin B sulfate (3,000,000 units/day) or an intramuscular injection of enrofloxacin (0.6 g enrofloxacin/day). In the large intestine of enrofloxacin-treated pigs, Gram-negative facultative anaerobic rods phy...

As a novel strategy to remove β-lactam antibiotic residues from fish tissues, utilization of β-lactamase, enzyme that normally degrades β-lactam structure-containing drugs, was explored. The enzyme (TEM-52) selectively degraded β-lactam antibiotics but was completely inactive against tetracycline-, quinolone-, macrolide-, or aminoglycosidestructured antibacterials. After simultaneous administra...

An online survey of members of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery indicated a strong preference for preoperative and postoperative topical antibiotic prophylaxis, with most surgeons favoring latest generation topical fluoroquinolones. A significant percentage of surgeons reported being concerned about the risks of homemade intracameral antibiotic preparations, and there was...

Antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended for endoscopic procedures if the patient is at high risk of endocarditis and there is a high risk of bacteraemia as a consequence of the procedure. The high risk procedures are oesophageal dilatation, laser or argon beam ablation of a tumour and variceal injection. Antibiotic prophylaxis is also recommended if symptomatic bacteraemia is potentially life thr...

CAP18 (an 18-kDa cationic antimicrobial protein) is a granulocyte-derived protein that can bind lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and inhibit various activities of LPS in vitro. The present study examined the protective effect of a synthetic 27-amino-acid peptide (CAP18(109-135)) from the LPS-binding domain of CAP18 against antibiotic-induced endotoxin shock, using highly LPS-sensitive D-(+)-galactosami...
