A new maintenance policy which minimizes the total expected servicing cost for an item with two–dimensional warranty is proposed. An iterative procedure to estimate the item’s failure rate function from historical observations and an optimization algorithm based on Monte Carlo simulation are applied to obtain the best maintenance policy. Numerical examples and sensitivity analysis are presented.

Most of the brand new items are released on the market with a certain type of warranty. A xed length warranty period is assumed in this paper. A maintenance policy which consists of minimal repair and preventive maintenance is analyzed for the case of known and unknown failure parameters of the item's lifetime distribution. For the second case, two types of Bayesian policies are considered. An ...

This paper addresses the effect of twodimensional warranty policies on the procedure for forecasting the cost of unreliability. Automotive warranties are characterized by age or time in service and vehicle usage mileage. This paper presents a model where the usage time is a primary variable and the mileage accumulation is estimated from field return data. At each time interval the probability o...

This paper analyses life cycle cost for equipment protected by both base and extended warranty policies from a consumer’s perspective. We assume that the equipment have two types of failures: minor and catastrophic. A minor failure can be corrected by a minimal repair whereas a catastrophic failure can only be removed by a replacement. The equipment is assumed to be maintained at no charge to t...

Amongst the many approaches in modelling deteriorating systems with product warranty, renewing warranty has found favor in designing such systems. In this chapter our attention is focused on renewing warranty policy modelled using quasi-renewal inter repair times. With the basic classification of warranty policies viewed in the previous chapters, the warranties are further categorized as renewi...

Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to develop a conceptual framework that integrates the technology and commercial issues early at the design stage to minimize warranty costs in the most effective and efficient manner and also to develop a model for optimization of warranty with specific focus on reliability and warranty policies. Design/methodology/approach – The critical issues in warranty...

In today’s global environment, technology is constantly evolving. Being able to stay up-to-date with the very latest technological advances can be extremely hard to accomplish. As a result of these changes and developments in technology, which often come unexpectedly, consumers are frequently tempted to update their devices to the very latest model. The result is that the life cycle of a produc...

A warranty policy for a product should balance the interests of both producer and consumer. Consumer protection is typically provided by a guarantee of replacement or some form of repair of the product failing within a promised warranty period, while an approach to provide a corresponding protection for the manufacturer is to limit the maximum usage allowed under warranty. Such warranty policie...
