Beryllium (atomic number, 4; relative atomic mass, 9.01) is a metal, which belongs to Group IIA of the Periodic Table. The oxidation state of beryllium compounds is +2. Selected chemical and physical properties of beryllium, beryllium– aluminium and beryllium–copper alloys, and various beryllium compounds can be found in the previous IARC Monograph (IARC, 1993). Beryllium is the lightest of all...

OBJECTIVES To study the load of selected organochlorine compounds in the blood of aluminium foundry workers who use hexachloroethane as a degassing agent for aluminium and to measure some possible effects on internal organs. METHODS Plasma from nine male aluminium foundry workers with past experience of use of hexachloroethane and 18 controls (two controls per exposed case) matched for reside...

We report the study of the resistance of archetypal MOFs (MILs, HKUST-1, UiO-66, and ZIF-8) under gamma irradiation. The different porous solids were irradiated with doses up to 1.75 MGy. All the MOFs constructed with transition metals (Cu2+, Zn2+, Zr4+) exhibit an evident destruction of the framework, whereas the compounds constructed with aluminium remain intact.

Considerable concern has been expressed regarding the possible toxicity of A1 in the body. In particular, many workers have speculated that this metal may be an important causative agent in Alzheimer’s disease (e.g. McLachlan, 1991) as this disease is characterized by a dementia that is similar to dialysis dementia which is known to be caused by the accumulation of A1 in the brain (Alfrey et al...

This study describes a model (MIKADO) to analyse options to reduce the environmental impact of aluminium die casting. This model will take a company perspective, so that it can be used as a decision-support tool for the environmental management of a plant. MIKADO can be used to perform scenario analyses to analyse the impact on the environment of different strategies, while taking into account ...

Aluminium is used extensively in the transportation, architecture, electronic and packaging industries. Aluminium presents particular characteristics such as low density, high ductility and a highly protective natural oxide film. However, formability, corrosion resistance, weldability, adhesion and surface aspect depend on the chemistry and microstructure of the metal surface. Properties of par...

Aluminium, with more than 50 Mt annual production in 2016, is an essential material in modern engineering designs of lightweight structures. To obtain aluminium ingots from bauxite, three main processes are involved: the Bayer process to produce alumina from bauxite; the anode manufacturing process to produce electrodes, and the smelting process using the Hall-Héroult technology. The Hall-Hérou...
