Allium sativum L. belongs to a member of the onion family (Alliaceae) and has been used for both culinary and medical purpose. We cloned 4-coumarate:CoA ligase (4CL) from Allium sativum. 4-Coumarate:CoA ligase has an important role in the biosynthesis of plant secondary metabolites at the divergence point from general phenylpropanoid metabolism to several major branch pathways. Its deduced amin...

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is considered one of the twenty most important vegetables, with various uses throughout the world, either as a raw vegetable for culinary purposes, or as an ingredient of traditional and modern medicine. Furthermore, it has also been proposed as one of the richest sources of total phenolic compounds, among the usually consumed vegetables, and has been highly ranked re...

Watary extract of ALLIUM SATIVUM when administered Intravenously (I.V.) to NORMOTENSIVE dogs, produced a significant fall in their mean blood pressure. This effect was not antagonized by atropine or antihistamines. The extract increased the activity of Isolated Guinea Pig Ileum preparation. This effect of A Sativum was blocked by Diamentane (JPMA 31:12, 1981).

Overview Garlic’s current principal medicinal uses are to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, as an antimicrobial, and as a preventive agent for cancer. The active constituents are several complex sulfur-containing compounds that are rapidly absorbed, transformed and metabolized. Pooled data from numerous randomized trials suggest that garlic low...

Two garlic subspecies (n = 11), Allium sativum L. var. opioscorodon (hardneck) and Allium sativum L. var. sativum (softneck), were evaluated for their free amino acid composition. The free amino acid content of garlic samples analyzed ranged from 1121.7 to 3106.1 mg/100 g of fresh weight (mean = 2130.7 +/- 681.5 mg/100 g). Hardneck garlic had greater methiin, alliin, and total free amino acids ...

Plants of the Allium genus, for example garlic and onion, are relatively odourless as long as they are intact. But if they are crushed or cut, a bunch of strong aromas are released. This is the result of a reaction between the enzyme alliinase and its substrates, alk(en)yl cysteine derivatives, probably as a defence against pests (Ellmore et al., 1994; Ankri et al., 1999). This occurs after cel...
