Pectobacterium spp. are bacterial pathogens causing soft rot diseases on a wide range of plants and crops. We present in this paper the draft genome sequences of three bacterial strains, Pseudomonas brassicacearum PP1-210F and PA1G7 and Bacillus simplex BA2H3, which exhibit antagonistic activities against the Pectobacterium plant pathogens.

Plectosphaerella cucumerina, most frequently encountered in its Plectosporium state, is well known as a pathogen of several plant species causing fruit, root and collar rot, and collapse. It is considered to pose a serious threat to melon (Cucumis melo) production in Italy. In the present study, an intensive sampling of diseased cucurbits as well as tomato and bell pepper was done and the funga...

Because of climatic constraints, agriculture in temperate areas of India is mostly limited to a single grain crop. During winters vegetable or oilseed crops may be cultivated at the lower altitudes but the higher altitudes remain barren due to snow cover. Horticulture, another important pursuit of farmers is again limited to summers. In order to supplement their income, the farmers in these are...

Results We present global planting date patterns for maize, spring wheat and winter wheat (our full, publicly available data set contains planting and harvesting dates for 19 major crops). Maize planting in the northern mid-latitudes generally occurs in April and May. Daily average air temperatures are usually c. 12–17 °C at the time of maize planting in these regions, although soil moisture of...

This study investigates how context-specific institutional factors affect innovative capabilities of the agricultural crop biotechnology sector in Hungary. Answering this question has involved three areas of research, into: the network of actors and its accommodation of technological characteristics; the sustained use of institutional arrangements which characterised the pre-transition science ...

South East Asia is widely regarded as a centre of threatened biodiversity owing to extensive logging and forest conversion to agriculture. In particular, forests degraded by repeated rounds of intensive logging are viewed as having little conservation value and are afforded meagre protection from conversion to oil palm. Here, we determine the biological value of such heavily degraded forests by...

Figs are one of the oldest known crops. The identification of different varieties is clouded and confused because of this long history. Efforts were made at various times to describe an accurate system for identifying varieties, with limited success.

The basic diversity data of landraces has been found important to monitor the dynamics of crop genetic resource management. The diversity data generated in time and space have been valuable to communtities, scientists and policy managers to formulate and implement conservation strategies of in situ, on-farm as well as ex situ conservation and management of genetic resources. In this paper, we d...
