Sequencing 16S rRNA genes (SSU) cloned from Aeromonas strains revealed that strains contained up to six copies differing by < or = 1.5%. The SSU copies from Aeromonas veronii LMG13695 clustered with sequences from four Aeromonas species. These results demonstrate intragenomic heterogeneity of SSU and suggest caution when using SSU to identify aeromonads.
BACKGROUND Although aeromonads are important pathogens causing invasive infections in southern Taiwan, Aeromonas-associated intestinal infections have been rarely mentioned. PURPOSE The aim of this study was to understand the frequency of isolation and clinical significance of aeromonads recovered from adult stool samples in southern Taiwan. METHODS During a 15-month study period, 514 adult...
Forty-eight isolates of aeromonads from clinical specimens were studied. The laboratory procedures employed and the results obtained are reported in the hope that they may be of assistance to other workers in the field of diagnostic microbiology. Capability of identifying these organisms in the laboratory will contribute to a better understanding of the role of this group of organisms in human ...
The acetic acid-mediated suicide phenomenon in mesophilic aeromonads in conjunction with tests for aerogenicity and esculin hydrolysis served as the basis for species identification. Of 210 Aeromonas isolates tested at 30 degrees C, 88 were identified as Aeromonas hydrophila (nonsuicidal, aerogenic, esculin positive), 52 were identified as A. sobria (suicide variable, aerogenic, esculin negativ...
Introduction Aeromonads of medical importance have been reported from numerous clinical, food, and water sources, but identification of genospecies and virulence factors of Aeromonas species from countries in North Africa and the Middle East are few. Methods In total 99 Aeromonas species isolates from different sources (diarrheal children [n=23], non-diarrheal children [n=16], untreated drinkin...
A total of 50 strains of Aeromonas spp. were isolated from 50 water and fish samples, and identified biochemically and genetically. Biochemical characterization indicated that 20 out of 50 aeromonads were A. veronii, 19 were A. caviae, 9 were A. hydrophila and 2 were A. trota. Molecular identification of isolated aeromonads revealed restriction profile of four species i.e. A. sobria, A. media, ...
The use of untreated water for drinking and other activities have been associated with intestinal and extraintestinal infections in humans due to Aeromonas species. In the present study aeromonads were isolated from 48.7% of 1,000 water samples obtained from wells and other miscellaneous sources. Aeromonas species were detected in 45% of samples tested in spring, 34.5% in summer, 48% in autumn ...
