The paper deals with the electromagnetic forces in induction machines when the rotor is in cylindrical whirling motion, symmetric conical whirling motion or combination of them. These motions describe the eccentric movements of the rigid rotor in induction machines. The time stepping finite element analysis is used for solving the magnetic field, and the forces are calculated from the air gap b...

This chapter deals with the vibration attenuation or vibration suppression by means of feedback control techniques applied to decrease the dynamic response of a rotor assumed as active magnetic dynamic damping which is common in rotating machinery supported by active magnetic bearings. Position control systems applied on active magnetic bearings are using sometimes nonlinear robust control tech...

There are many types of bearings available, each used for different purposes and different conditions. Two major types of bearings are contact bearings and noncontact bearings. By considering the ball material, I separate the contact bearings to steel bearings and ceramic ball bearings. On the other hand, there are bearings that can run without any contact between the sliding surfaces in the be...

A novel application, employing the strategy of Active Disturbance Rejection Control and an Extended State Observer, is proposed to control the rotor shaft position of NASA’s High Speed Shaft (HSS) Flywheel using active magnetic bearings. The robustness of the control is demonstrated in a frequency domain analysis and in simulations to be a major improvement of controls recently studied at NASA.

Flywheel systems based on fibre composites can have power densities which are significantly better than for electrochemical batteries. Hence, they have considerable potential for use as peak power buffers in drive-trains for electric and hybrid vehicles. As the rotational speed is increased, however, bearing friction power loss and iron losses in the motor/generator become more significant. Thu...
