In this study, we introduce an arthroscopic acromioplasty technique based on original bony landmarks, namely biplanar acromioplasty. This focuses smoothing both the coronal and transverse plane of acromion, corresponding to anterior inferior acromial surface, restores acromion its shape. We believe is effective, time-saving, reproducible.
Examination was made of 750 scapular dry bone specimens from museum collections and 80 cadaver shoulders. Hooking of the acromion was not found in subjects under the age of 30 years. The hooked configuration developed at later ages in an increasing proportion of subjects as a result of calcification of the acromial attachment of the coracoacromial ligament.
Avulsion fracture of the acromion is rare. It is difficult to diagnosis because there is little displacement and it occurs even without direct trauma. We experienced a case without direct trauma that was diagnosed with ultrasonography. A 55-year-old male patient visited our outpatient clinic with shoulder pain resulting from a significant stress at the trapezius muscle during lifting of a steel...
BACKGROUND Stress fractures of the base of the acromion are rare and tend to progress well when conservatively treated. The need for surgery due to this type of fracture has only been reported in two case reports. CASE PRESENTATION A 39-year-old patient, manual laborer, with a stress fracture at the base of the acromion that required surgical treatment due to persistent symptoms and consolida...
BACKGROUND The axillary nerve may be injured during percutaneous fixation of proximal humerus fractures. This study investigated the kinematic behavior of the superior and inferior borders of the axillary nerve under varying shoulder positions. This information may reduce iatrogenic neurologic injury during fracture reduction and hardware placement. METHODS The lateral deltoid approach was pe...
PURPOSE Traditional teaching suggests that a safe deltoid split should extend no more than 5 cm from the lateral edge of the acromion. However, there are reports of nerves lying within this distance. Our aim was to redefine the safe maximum split and also to study the influence of arm length and position. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty cadaveric shoulders were dissected using the deltoid-splitt...
OBJECTIVE To determine the distance between the axillary nerve and the antero-lateral (AL) edge of the acromion, its anatomical variability and relationship to humeral length and body height. METHODS Twenty-two shoulders were dissected. The anterosuperior (AS) approach was used; the deltoid was detached from the acromion and the distance between the AL portion and the axillary nerve was measu...
OBJECTIVE To establish anatomical parameters for the axillary nerve by measuring the distances to the acromion and the deltopectoral access, and to ascertain whether there are any differences in comparative measurements between the left and right sides. METHOD An anatomical study on the path of the axillary nerve was conducted by dissecting 30 shoulders of 20 fresh adult cadavers. For compara...
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the lateral projection of the acromion and rotator cuff tears (RCTs) in the Brazilian population. METHODS The lateral projection of the acromion was measured using anteroposterior radiographs of the shoulders, carried out with the glenoid cavity in absolute profile and the humeral head in the neutral position or with...
