Mortality and reproduction are intimately entwined in the study of aging and longevity. I apply the modern theory of complex adaptive systems (nonlinear, stochastic, dynamic methods) to questions of aging and longevity. I begin by highlighting major questions that must be answered in order to obtain a deeper understanding of aging. These are: (i) What should (in an evolutionary sense) mortality...

In this article we advance a distinctly relational view of negotiation. We delineate the conditions through which relational self-construals (RSC) become accessible in negotiations and the conditions that inhibit their use, and we illustrate mechanisms through which RSC affects negotiation processes and outcomes. We introduce four relational dynamics—arelational trading, relational satisficing,...

Is senescence the adaptive result of tradeoffs between younger and older ages or the nonadaptive burden of deleterious mutations that act at older ages? To shed new light on this unresolved question we combine adaptive and nonadaptive processes in a single model. Our model uses Penna's bit-strings to capture different age-specific mutational patterns. Each pattern represents a genotype and for ...

We propose a framework for modelling knowledge accumulation and discoveries. We draw a distinction between novel (original) pieces of knowledge and pieces of knowledge which are deducible from existing knowledge or past discoveries. We show that every deducible piece of knowledge is associated with a unique set of discoveries such that each discovery in this set is indispensable in deducing thi...

We report a new technique for building a wide-angle, lightweight, thin-form-factor, cost-effective, easy-to-manufacture near-eye head-mounted display (HMD) for virtual reality applications. Our approach adopts an aperture mask containing an array of pinholes and a screen as a source of imagery. We demonstrate proof-of-concept HMD prototypes with a binocular field of view (FOV) of 70°×45°, or to...

This study investigates the extent to which asset accumulation by young married couples in early married life can be explained by financial, other economic and attitudinal variables. It finds, among other things, that at least for this sample, those who started out better off kept getting still better off financially, and that going into debt was a major correlate of later financial well being.

Loss of fitness due to the accumulation of deleterious mutations appears to be inevitable in small, obligately asexual populations, as these are incapable of reconstituting highly fit genotypes by recombination or back mutation. The cumulative buildup of such mutations is expected to lead to an eventual reduction in population size, and this facilitates the chance accumulation of future mutatio...

This paper introduces accumulation into list homomorphisms for systematic development of both efficient and correct parallel programs. New parallelizable recursive pattern called H-homomorphism is given, and transformations from sequential patterns in the H-form and Hform into (H-)homomorphism are shown. We illustrate the power of our formalization by developing a novel and general parallel pro...
