A two-dimensional mean field dynamo model is solved where magnetic helicity conservation is fully included. The model has a negative radial velocity gradient giving rise to equatorward migration of magnetic activity patterns. In addition the model develops longitudinal variability with activity patches travelling in longitude. These patches may be associated with active longitudes.

In a previous study it was reported that whistlermode signals received at Faraday, Antarctica …65 S; 64 W† and Dunedin, New Zealand …46 S; 171 E† with entry regions in Paci®c longitudes (typically from the VLF transmitter NLK, Seattle, USA) showed an increase in transmission of wave energy as magnetic activity increased. However, signals with entry regions in Atlantic longitudes (typically from...

The study area is located at 220 km southwest of Mashhad and 80 km south of Neyshabur and is situated between 58° 40' 30" to 58° 43' 30" E longitudes and 35° 47' 30" to 35° 52' 00" N latitudes. The study area is part of Sabzevar zone. The lithology of the area consists mainly of volcanic rocks with trachyte, trachy andesite, and basaltic trachy andesite composition and in some parts has been su...

We describe the use of herpesvirus promoters to regulate the expression of a Sindbis virus replicon (SINrep/LacZ). We isolated cell lines that contain the cDNA of SINrep/LacZ under the control of a promoter from a herpesvirus early gene which requires regulatory proteins encoded by immediate-early genes for expression. Wild-type Sindbis virus and replicons derived from this virus cause death of...

In many active stars the spots concentrate on two permanent active longitudes which are 180◦ apart. In some of these stars the dominant part of the spot activity changes the longitude every few years. This so-called flip-flop phenomenon has up to now been reported in 11 stars, both single and binary alike, and including also the Sun. To explain this phenomenon, a non-axisymmetric dynamo mode, g...
