This paper examines how surveying and monitoring improve our knowledge about ancient buildings, allow the interpretation of their structural response and help in the search for the best solutions for their conservation. The case study of Palazzo del Capitano in Mantua (Italy) is analyzed. In particular, the attention is focused on the use of a Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) for surveying and m...

We previously[3] defined eight second-order volumetric primitives and then showed[4] that they can be extracted from range data. This paper shows that by using them model matching is more efficient, because the shape vocabulary reduces the combinatorial generation of hypotheses. With the model-to-data correspondences, accurate three dimensional model location is possible.

Students have trouble using and interpreting topographic maps. Experienced map-users identify patterns of contour lines representing topographic structures and visualize that information in 3D. Novices struggle with both recognizing 2D patterns and visualizing 3D structures from contour lines. In this study, the Pattern Identification group received instruction focused on identifying contour pa...

Over the past decade, land-based laser scanning technologies have been actively studied and implemented, in response to the need for detailed three-dimensional (3D) data about our rural and urban environment for topographic mapping, cadastral mapping, and other street-level features, which are difficult and time consuming to measure by other instruments. For rural areas in China, the complex te...

The largest organ of human body ”skin” is a multilayered organ with complex reflectance properties that not only vary with the direction of illumination but also with the wavelength of light. The complex Three Dimensional (3D) structure and optical properties of human skin makes it very difficult for techniques like Photometric stereo to accurately recover its 3D shape. One problem in particula...

Performing precision monitoring for changes to seafloor topography is necessary to accurately examine the state of accidents of all sorts on the coast. Thus, this study proposed a new change detection technique to monitor changes to seafloor topography by systemizing the post-processing technique for MBES sounding data and 3D modeling technique. This study also applied the proposed technique to...

Double-sided high-sloped structured surfaces such as V-groove surfaces and Fresnel lenses are widely used in optical fibre positioning, retro-reflection, grating, light guiding and light concentration for solar power installation. Both the surface finish as well as the dimensions of the structured surfaces play important roles in the quality of the final products. Numerous efforts have been put...

Introduction: To improve anatomical atlases, we tried to create a printable 3D atlas of rabbit's anatomy based on the Anaglyph. Methods: In this study, twenty white rabbits euthanized and dissected. All 3D images were reconstructed by means of "stereo photo maker (SPM®)" software. Results: By this atlas, users can easily understand nomenclature, the topography and, certainly, the transpo...

3D visualization was established for noninvasive evaluation of neurovascular compression syndromes. MR-CISS (constructive interference in the steady state) is the most potent image source to depict neurovascular details. The purpose of this article is the conceptual view over the established technique of 3D visualization in the topography of aneurysms in the posterior circulation in relation to...

We report a novel optical microscope for full-field, noncontact measurements of three-dimensional (3D) surface deformation and topography at the microscale. The microscope system is based on a seamless integration of the diffraction-assisted image correlation (DAIC) method with fluorescent microscopy. We experimentally demonstrate the microscope's capability for 3D measurements with submicromet...
