INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to observe the formation of biofilm, an important virulence factor, by isolates of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in Pakistan by different conventional methods and through electron microscopy. METHODOLOGY We screened 115 strains of S. aureus isolated from different clinical specimens by tube method (TM), air-liquid interface coverslip assay method...
Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR-9) recognizes unmethylated CpG dinucleotides which are abundant in prokaryotic DNA and yet are rare in eukaryotic DNA. Little is known about the significance of TLR-9 in terms of recognition of different bacterial DNA species. In this study HEK293 cells stably transfected with human TLR-9 were used to analyze the immunostimulatory properties of 15 bacterial DNA prepara...
We determined the nucleotide sequence 3.8 kb upstream and 5.2 kb downstream of the toxin genes A and B of Clostridium difficile. Nine ORFs were discovered. Based on PCR-directed approaches, two were attributed to the pathogenicity locus (PaLoc). The other seven were found in every C. difficile isolate obtained from the human gastrointestinal tract, respectless of their toxinogenicity. The ORFs ...
Seven quinolone antibiotics were tested against 115 isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The MICs for 90% of the strains tested were 0.5 microgram/ml for A-56619, A-56620, ciprofloxacin, and ofloxacin; 2.0 micrograms/ml for amifloxacin and enoxacin; and 4.0 micrograms/ml for norfloxacin. Killing kinetic studies showed a similar killing rate for all seven antibiotics.
Strains (115) of Bacteroides fragilis were identified at the subspecific level and were tested for susceptibility to ampicillin, cephalothin, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, penicillin, and tetracycline using an agar dilution technique. We tested the following strains: B. fragilis subsp. distasonis, 12; B. fragilis subsp. fragilis, 39; B. fragilis subsp. ovatus, 10; B. fragilis subsp. thetaiotaom...
Thirteen different serogroup strains of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and two strains of Yersinia enterocolitica O:3 were examined for the presence of plasmids and plasmid-mediated properties, calcium growth dependency, and autoagglutination. Two Y. enterocolitica strains and eight serogroup (IA, IIA, IIC, III, IVA, VB, VI, and VIII) strains, except for five serogroups (IB, IIB, IVB, VA, and VII)...
Great differences in capability to detect bacteriophages from urban sewage of the area of Barcelona existed among 115 strains of Bacteroides fragilis. The capability of six of the strains to detect phages in a variety of feces and wastewater was studied. Strains HSP40 and RYC4023 detected similar numbers of phages in urban sewage and did not detect phages in animal feces. The other four strains...
Canine parvovirus disease appeared in the world and in Europe during the second half of the 1970s. Over the course of 40 years the original CPV-2 strains mutated and variants 2a, 2b and 2c appeared. Their appearance is connected with specific amino acid changes, mainly in the capsid protein VP2. Strains isolated by the authors were adapted for in vitro cell culture. Phylogenetic analysis reveal...
