A plasmid containing multidrug resistance genes has been discovered from a clinical Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae strain isolated in China. The complete 15079kb sequence of this plasmid, designated pHB0503, was analyzed with regard to the organization and evolution of multidrug resistance genes. The deduced amino acid sequences from seven open reading frames (sul2 catA3, aacC2, strA, truncate...

In 200 sulfonamide-resistant Portuguese Salmonella isolates, 152 sul1, 74 sul2, and 14 sul3 genes were detected. Class 1 integrons were always associated with sul genes, including sul3 alone in some isolates. The sul3 gene has been identified in isolates from different sources and serotypes, which also carried a class 1 integron with aadA and dfrA gene cassettes.

We describe here the whole-genome sequence and basic characteristics of Escherichia coli isolate 15-AB01393, recovered from German beef within a national monitoring program in 2015. This isolate was identified as an extended-spectrum-β-lactamase-producing E. coli strain of multilocus sequence type (MLST) ST58 harboring the antimicrobial resistance genes blaCTX-M-1, mph(A), sul2, dfrA5, strA, an...

In Latin America, the disease burden of shigellosis is found to coexist with the rapid and rampant spread of resistance to commonly used antibiotics. The molecular basis of antibiotic resistance lies within genetic elements such as plasmids, transposons, integrons, genomic islands, etc., which are found in the bacterial genome. Integrons are known to acquire, exchange, and express genes within ...

Treated wastewater is increasingly being reused to achieve sustainable water management in arid regions. The objective of this study was to quantify the distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in recycled water, particularly after it has passed through the distribution system, and to consider point-of-use implications for soil irrigation. Three separate reclaimed wastewater distribut...

To assess the presence and distribution of the sul genes (sul1, sul2, and sul3) and plasmids in human-mediated environments of north Vietnam, we examined a total of 127 sulfonamide-resistant (SR) bacterial isolates from four shrimp ponds (HNAQs), a city canal (HNCs) and three fish ponds that received wastewater directly from swine farms (HNPs). Results from the SR isolates revealed that sul gen...

Antibiotic resistant bacteria are ubiquitous in the natural environment. The introduction of effluent derived antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) into aquatic environments is of concern in the spreading of genetic risk. This study showed the prevalence of sulfonamide and tetracycline resistance genes, sul1, sul2, sul3, and tet(M), in the total bacterial assemblage and colony forming bacterial asse...

Antimicrobial resistance was studied in Escherichia coli strains isolated from urine samples of 457 patients suffering from urinary tract infection. High prevalence of class 1 integrons (43.56%), sulfamethoxazole resistance genes sul1 (45.54%) and sul2 (51.48%) along with occurrence of quinolone resistance genes was detected in multi drug resistance isolates.

Multidrug resistance to streptomycin, sulfonamide, and tetracycline (AMR-SSuT) was identified in 156 of 171 isolates of Escherichia coli O157:H7 of phage types 23, 45, and 67. In 154 AMR-SSuT isolates, resistance was encoded by strA, strB, sul2, and tet(B), which in 59 of 63 tested isolates were found clustered together on the chromosome within the cdiA locus.

Marine bacteria are possible reservoirs of antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) originating not only from clinical and terrestrial hot spots but also the marine environment. We report here for first time a higher rate sulfonamide-resistance gene sul4 in bacterial isolates compared with other sul genes. Among four ( sul1 , sul2 sul3 ), was most abundant (45%) 74 sulfonamide-resistant by PCR screen...
