Wall teichoic acid (WTA) of Staphylococcus aureus is a major cell envelope-associated glycopolymer that is a key molecule in promoting colonization during S. aureus infection. The complement system plays a key role in the opsonization and clearance of pathogens. We recently reported that S. aureus WTA functions as a ligand of human serum mannose-binding lectin (MBL), a recognition molecule of t...

BACKGROUND Specific strains of Lactobacillus plantarum are marketed as health-promoting probiotics. The role and interplay of cell-wall compounds like wall- and lipo-teichoic acids (WTA and LTA) in bacterial physiology and probiotic-host interactions remain obscure. L. plantarum WCFS1 harbors the genetic potential to switch WTA backbone alditol, providing an opportunity to study the impact of W...

This paper shows the application of Wang’s Recurrent Neural Network with the 'Winner Takes All' (WTA) principle in a soft version to solve the Traveling Salesman Problem. In soft WTA principle the winner neuron is updated at each iteration with part of the value of each competing neuron and some comparisons with the hard WTA are made in this work with instances of the TSPLIB (Traveling Salesman...

AbstractWe explore competitive Hebbian learning strategies to train feature detectors in Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), without supervision. We consider variants of the Winner-Takes-All (WTA) strategy explored previous works, i.e. k-WTA, e-soft-WTA and p-soft-WTA, performing experiments on different object recognition datasets. Results suggest that approaches are effective early extracti...

Winner-take-all (WTA) circuits are commonly used in a wide variety of applications. One of the most used current-mode WTA designs is the one originally proposed by Lazzaro et al. [1]. Several extensions to this design have been suggested in the past. In this paper we present a variant of this current-mode WTA circuit, containing all of the enhancements previously proposed, together with new add...

Two types of simulations for weighted tree automata (wta) are considered. Wta process trees and assign a weight to each of them. The weights are taken from a semiring. The two types of simulations work for wta over additively idempotent, commutative semirings and can be used to reduce the size of wta while preserving their semantics. Such reductions are an important tool in automata toolkits.

The LytR-CpsA-Psr (LCP) proteins are thought to transfer bactoprenol-linked biosynthetic intermediates of wall teichoic acid (WTA) to the peptidoglycan of Gram-positive bacteria. In Bacillus subtilis, mutants lacking all three LCP enzymes do not deposit WTA in the envelope, while Staphylococcus aureus Δlcp mutants display impaired growth and reduced levels of envelope phosphate. We show here th...

UNLABELLED Nasal colonization by the human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus is a major risk factor for hospital- and community-acquired infections. A key factor required for nasal colonization is a cell surface-exposed zwitterionic glycopolymer, termed wall teichoic acid (WTA). However, the precise mechanisms that govern WTA-mediated nasal colonization have remained elusive. Here, we report that ...

The C-terminal cell wall binding domains (CBDs) of phage endolysins direct the enzymes to their binding ligands on the bacterial cell wall with high affinity and specificity. The Listeria monocytogenes Ply118, Ply511, and PlyP40 endolysins feature related CBDs which recognize the directly cross-linked peptidoglycan backbone structure of Listeria. However, decoration with fluorescently labeled C...
