Trichomonas vaginalis is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) causing vaginitis. Microscopy has poor sensitivity but is used for diagnosis of trichomoniasis in resource-poor settings. We aimed to provide a more reliable diagnosis of trichomoniasis by investigating an association with leukorrhea. Women presenting for evaluation of vaginal discharge, STI exposure, or preventative gynecol...

Trichomonas vaginalis has long been recognized as one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections. However, it is only in recent years that it has been appreciated that Trichomonas may play a critical role in amplifying human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission. Given the evidence that T. vaginalis likely promotes HIV infection, the apparent high level of Trichomonas infection i...

The indirect fluorescent antibody test was used to detect antibodies to Trichomonas vaginalis in 200 antenatal patients. A total of 104 (52%) gave a positive reaction with antigen prepared from cultures of trichomonas isolated from seven of the patients. Antitrichomonal antibody was detected at a 1/4 dilution in 90% of patients with proven trichomoniasis, while the highest dilution at which ant...

The impact of the viability of Trichomonas vaginalis in urine on wet mount, culture, and PCR methods was assessed. To minimize the chance of false-negative results, urine specimens should be processed within 30 min of specimen collection and maintained at 37 degrees C, since temperature appears to affect the viability of Trichomonas.

Six isolates of a strain (MRP-MT) of Trichomonas vaginalis obtained from a woman before and after unsuccessful treatment with metronidazole had an appreciably lower susceptibility to metronidazole both in vitro in the aerobic tube assay and in vivo in the mouse assay than did control strains from patients cured with standard doses of the drug. Our results support recent evidence that metronidaz...

PCR analysis in two unusual occurrences of trichomoniasis, trichomonal empyema due to Trichomonas tenax and Trichomonas vaginalis in an infant urine sample, allowed us to obtain rapid and accurate trichomonad species identification. The weak sensitivity of wet preparations and the low viability of the flagellates can be remedied by the PCR method.

OBJECTIVE The epidemiology of Trichomonas vaginalis infection among sexually active socially-marginalized women in three urban, coastal Peruvian cities was examined in order to quantify the prevalence of trichomonas infection and identify associated risk factors. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional, venue-based study of women from socially-marginalized populations in three coastal Peruvian...

Distinguishing between re-infection and relapse of trichomonas infections is often a difficult task in the clinical setting. The chronicity of trichomonas infections and the ongoing sexual activity are two confounding factors. We present a patient with recurrent resistant vaginal trichomoniasis shortly following a sexual contact with an untreated partner after a complete response to treatment w...
