BACKGROUND Dengue infection ranks as one of the most significant viral diseases of the globe. Currently, there is no specific vaccine or antiviral therapy for prevention or treatment. Monocytes/macrophages are the principal target cells for dengue virus and are responsible for disseminating the virus after its transmission. Dengue virus enters target cells via receptor-mediated endocytosis afte...

BACKGROUND Previous studies using cell culture systems for the replication of hepatitis C virus have opened new research dimensions, and paved the ways for further and detailed studies of the virus in vitro. OBJECTIVES The purpose of the present study was to cultivate hepatitis C virus in a cell culture system and evaluate viral amplification. MATERIALS AND METHODS In order to propagate hep...

Jembrana disease virus (JDV) is an acutely pathogenic lentivirus that affects Bali cattle in Indonesia. The inability to propagate the virus in vitro has made it difficult to quantitate JDV and determine the kinetics of virus replication during the acute phase of the disease process. We report for the first time two techniques that enable quantification of the virus and the use of these techniq...

Autopsy studies have shown that human highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (H5N1) can infect multiple human organs other than just the lungs, and that possible causes of organ damage are either viral replication and/or dysregulation of cytokines and chemokines. Uncertainty still exists, partly because of the limited number of cases analysed. In this study, a full autopsy including 5 organ sy...

Quantitative analysis of the relationship between virus expression and disease outcome has been critical for understanding HIV-1 pathogenesis. Yet the amount of viral RNA contained within an HIV-expressing cell and the relationship between the number of virus-producing cells and plasma virus load has not been established or reflected in models of viral dynamics. We report here a novel strategy ...

Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is mostly caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) while IM by cytomegalovirus (CMV) is rather rare. In our retrospective clinical research with multiplex virus PCR analysis, we encountered 6 cases of CMV-IM and analyzed the clinical characteristics including diagnostic problems. The diagnosis of CMV-IM was made when the CMV genome was solely detected from the patient’s ...

We report a case of early-onset acute Guillain-Barre syndrome associated with reactivation of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection after nonmyeloablative stem cell transplantation (NST). Reactivation of EBV infection preceded disease onset, and the virus load increased concomitantly with disease progression (doubling time, 2.7 days). This case raises concern about the expanding scope of manifesta...

An apparently transient infection by a superimposed torquetenovirus (TTV) in a subject who already carried three different genotypes of the virus is described. The superinfection induced a rapid increase in the plasma TTV load and a decline in immunocomplexed virus. The superinfecting TTV was a novel group 2 genotype.
