Six major groups of enteric bacteria, viz, Faecal coliforms, E. coli, Shigella spp., Salmonella spp., Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio cholerae were screened for the present study. The overall percentage occurrence of enteric bacteria in water and sediment was maximum accounted for Vibrio parahaemolyticus (81.7%) and minimum for Salmonella spp. (9.6%) and moderate reported against Vibrio chol...

BACKGROUND Cholera, an ancient scourge, continues to inflict high rates of mortality today. The rising incidence of epidemics in areas of poor sanitation and crowding highlight the need for better epidemic prevention and early response. Such interventions require the availability of rapid and accurate diagnostic techniques to trigger timely response and mitigate the scale of the outbreak. The c...

The enterotoxicity of an El Tor-like hemolysin purified from non-O1 Vibrio cholerae was investigated. Fluid accumulation was induced by injection of purified hemolysin into the ligated intestinal loops in adult rabbits (De test), intraintestinal administration in infant rabbits (Dutta test), and oral inoculation in suckling mice. The accumulated fluid was invariably mucous and bloody, and a his...

Gene organization and hierarchical regulation of the polar flagellar genes of Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio cholerae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa appear highly similar, with one puzzling difference. Two sigma(54)-dependent regulators are required to direct different classes of intermediate flagellar gene expression in V. cholerae and P. aeruginosa, whereas the V. parahaemolyticus homolog of on...

Organisms, including Vibrio cholerae, can be transferred between harbors in the ballast water of ships. Zones in the Caribbean region where distance from shore and water depth meet International Maritime Organization guidelines for ballast water exchange are extremely limited. Use of ballast water treatment systems could mitigate the risk for organism transfer.

Draft whole-genome sequencing of the Vibrio cholerae О1 El Tor clinical strain L3226, isolated in Moscow in 2010, was carried out. Various mutations in the virulence-associated mobile elements were determined in its genome that differentiated this strain from the reference V. cholerae О1 El Tor strain N16961.

This study reported the incidence of potentially pathogenic Vibrio spp. in fresh seafood from Itu creek. Studies were carried out to isolate, identify and characterized different Vibrio species in fish, crayfish and periwinkle obtained from the Itu creeks. Different parts analyzed using standard microbiological techniques were the gills, intestine and the body surfaces. The Vibrio species isola...

The fi(+) and fi(-) R factors are unstable in Vibrio cholerae even on selective media containing antibiotics, although a temperature-sensitive kanamycin resistance factor and its recombinants are stably maintained in V. cholerae at low temperatures.

We used multilocus sequence typing and variable number tandem repeat analysis to determine the clonal origins of Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor strains from an outbreak of cholera that began in 2009 in Papua New Guinea. The epidemic is ongoing, and transmission risk is elevated within the Pacific region.

To identify independent prognostic factors for fatality, 73 patients with a total of 75 episodes of invasive Vibrio. cholerae non-O1 infections treated from July 1998 through October 2001 at 2 medical centers were retrospectively studied. The demographic, laboratory, and clinical information of these patients were collected and analyzed. The overall mortality rate was 36%. Multivariate analysis...
