It is shown that Einstein-Yang-Mills-dilaton theory has a countable family of static globally regular solutions which are purely magnetic but uncharged. The discrete spectrum of masses of these solutions is bounded from above by the mass of extremal Gibbons-Maeda solution. As follows from linear stability analysis all solutions are unstable.

The stability of travelling wave solutions of singularly perturbed, diffusive predator-prey systems is proved by showing that the linearized operator about such a solution has no unstable spectrum and that the translation eigenvalue at k 0 is simple. The proof illustrates the application of some recently developed geometric and topological methods for counting eigenvalues.

Aldehyde hydrates are important but highly unstable, transient intermediates in biological and synthetic oxidations to carboxylic acids. We here report N-oxides as the first class of chemical reagents capable of stabilizing such water adducts. A series of aryl trihydroxyborate salts were synthesized and found to form gels in benzene. The compounds were thermally unstable and readily underwent protodeboronation in solution and the solid state. Gelation could be induced without decomposition via sonication.
