This study investigated the biochemical effects of administration of three types of recombinant growth hormone (GH; somatotropin) to the Thoroughbred horse. Equine or bovine or porcine GH was administered at a recommended dosage to 3-5-year old Thoroughbred geldings, for up to 21 days. It was shown that, in addition to equine GH, bovine and porcine GH were active in the horse; however, porcine ...
subluxation of the proximal interphalangeal joint (pipj or pastern joint) is an uncommon condition that occurs in the forelimb or hindlimb. thoroughbred racehorses rarely show dorsal pastern subluxation (thoroughbred ringbone) secondarily to an injury to the soft tissues supporting the fetlock. a 4-year-old thoroughbred mare was presented with signs of lameness, swelling of the dorsal aspect of...
The recent discovery of a novel beta-pore-forming toxin, NetF, which is strongly associated with canine and foal necrotizing enteritis should improve our understanding of the role of type A Clostridium perfringens associated disease in these animals. The current study presents the complete genome sequence of two netF-positive strains, JFP55 and JFP838, which were recovered from cases of foal ne...
The Finnish mating records of Standardbred trotters (SB; n = 33 679) and Finnhorses (FH; n = 32 731) were analysed to study the effect of the level of inbreeding on foaling rates and to estimate the heritability of foaling rate. A linear mixed model was assumed, with the outcome of the foaling (foal or no foal) as the trait of the study. A restricted maximum likelihood-based method was used to ...
An Arabian mare was referred for right granulosa-theca cell tumor (GTCT) evaluation. The mare was presented 4.5 years later for a left GTCT, after successfully conceiving and delivering a normal foal in the interim. The concurrent or nonconcurrent occurrence of bilateral GTCT in mares appears to be rare.
Cryptosporidium isolates from diarrheic foals in New Zealand (n = 9) were identified as C. parvum, subtyped at two polymorphic loci, and compared with human (n = 45) and bovine (n = 8) isolates. Foal C. parvum isolates were genetically diverse, markedly similar to human and bovine isolates, and carried GP60 IIaA18G3R1 alleles, indicating a zoonotic potential.

Ultrasonography in the neonate may be used in the initial evaluation to determine an anatomic location of sepsis or to evaluate for traumatic injury secondary to dystocia. It is often the first diagnostic tool applied after the physical evaluation of the foal. We have developed a treatment protocol for the successful induction of lactation in mares. This treatment consists of estrogen, progesterone, and sulpiride administration for 1 wk. Mares with induced lactation are able to adopt and nurse a foal to weaning age.
