The deep crustal heating, associated with exothermal nuclear reactions, is believed to be a key parameter for describing the thermal evolution of accreting neutron stars. In this paper, we present first thermodynamically consistent calculations heating realistic compositions thermonuclear ashes. contrast previous studies based on traditional approach, account hydrostatic/diffusion (nHD) equilib...

The large-number hypothesis conjectures that fundamental constants may vary. Accordingly, the spacetime variation of fundamental constants has been an active subject of research for decades. Recently, using data obtained with large telescopes a phenomenological model in which the fine structure constant might vary spatially has been proposed. We test whether this hypothetical spatial variation ...

This report contains two parts: (1) A list of “points” highlighting the strategic-political and military-technical reasons and implications of the very probable siting of ITER (the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) in Japan, which should be confirmed sometimes in early 2004. (2) A technical analysis of the nuclear weapons proliferation implications of inertialand magnetic-confin...

A novel method by C. Zhou and R. Betti [Bull. Am. Phys. Soc. 50, 140 (2005)] to assemble and ignite thermonuclear fuel is presented. Massive cryogenic shells are first imploded by direct laser light with a low implosion velocity and on a low adiabat leading to fuel assemblies with large areal densities. The assembled fuel is ignited from a central hot spot heated by the collision of a spherical...

We report the discovery with BeppoSAX-WFC of two new X-ray sources that were only seen during bursts: SAX J1753.5-2349 and SAX J1806.5-2215. For both sources, no steady emission was detected above an upper limit of 5 mCrab (2 to 8 keV) for 3 10 s around the burst events. The single burst detected from SAX J1753.52349 shows spectral softening and a black body color temperature of 2.0 keV. Follow...

A Demonstration (DEMO) thermonuclear reactor is the next step after International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). Designs for a DEMO divertor and First Wall require joining of tungsten to steel; this difficult task, however, because metals’ physical properties necessary operating conditions. Brazing prospective technology that could be used solve problem. This work examines state-of-...

We present Keck optical spectra of SN 2002cx, the most peculiar known Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), taken 227 and 277 days past maximum light. Astonishingly, the spectra are not dominated by the forbidden emission lines of iron that are a hallmark of thermonuclear supernovae in the nebular phase. Instead, we identify numerous P-Cygni profiles of Fe II at very low expansion velocities of ∼700 km s−...
