In humans, invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells represent a small but significant population of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) with a high degree of variability. In this study, pursuant to our goal of identifying an appropriate non-human primate model suitable for pre-clinical glycolipid testing, we evaluated the percentage and function of iNKT cells in the peripheral blood of pi...

For those who have not recognized the disparate natures of tests of statistical hypotheses and tests of scientific hypotheses, one-tailed statistical tests of null hypotheses such as ∂ ≤ 0 or ∂ ≥ 0 have often seemed a reasonable procedure. We earlier reviewed the many grounds for not regarding them as such. To have at least some power for detection of effects in the unpredicted direction, sever...

Rapid growth in heavy-tailed claim severity in commercial liability insurance requires insurer response by way of flexible mechanisms to update premiums. To this end in this paper a new premium principle is established for heavy-tailed claims, and its properties investigated. Risk-neutral premiums for heavy-tailed claims are consistently and unbiasedly estimated by the ratio of the first two ex...

This paper presents the first step in establishing a link between the heavy-tailed nature of terrain and a new terrain modeling technique, L1 splines, that is, splines based on minimizing the L1 norm rather than the square of the L2 norm. To establish this link, we focus on the heavy-tailed nature of the second derivatives that occur in the L1 spline minimization principles. For one urbanterrai...

— This paper is a survey of both classical and new results and ideas on long memory, scaling and self-similarity, both in the light-tailed and heavy-tailed cases. RÉSUMÉ. — Cet article est une synthèse de résultats et idées classiques ou nouveaux sur la longue mémoire, les changements d’échelles et l’autosimilarité, à la fois dans le cas de queues de distributions lourdes ou légères.

In this paper, two Shewhart-type nonparametric control charts based on runs rules are developed for monitoring the changes in the process variability. The charts are based on two nonparametric tests for equality of variances. The performance of the proposed control charts is evaluated for the normal, light tailed and heavy tailed distributions through average run length using simulations.

Under some relaxed conditions, in this paper we obtain some equivalent conditions on the asymptotics of the density of the supremum of a random walk with heavy-tailed increments. To do this, we investigate the asymptotics of the first ascending ladder height of a randomwalk with heavy-tailed increments. The results obtained improve and extend the corresponding classical results.

This paper investigates the problem of testing for the symmetry of linear time series driven by asymmetric innovations. In particular, we examine the performance of alternative symmetry tests when innovations are fat tailed. Among the tests considered, only the test based on the tail estimator of the spectral measure yields satisfactory results in the presence of fat-tailed innovations.

In this paper, we estimate GARCH, EGARCH, and GJR-GARCH models assuming normal and heavy-tailed distribution (i.e., GED). Results suggest that when the heavy-tailed distribution is considered, the persistence has found to be reduced in all the cases. Findings also reveal that positive shocks are more common than the negative shocks in this market.

To develop our understanding of myosin-1a function in vivo, we have created a mouse line null for the myosin-1a gene. Myosin-1a knockout mice demonstrate no overt phenotypes at the whole animal level but exhibit significant perturbations and signs of stress at the cellular level. Among these are defects in microvillar membrane morphology, distinct changes in brush-border organization, loss of n...
