We present a technique for the transfer and synthesis of geometric texture on 3D surface meshes. Our technique combines localised surface fitting together with non-parametric sampling to facilitate the extraction, transfer and successful synthesis of geometric relief from one surface mesh to another.

A technique for reconstructing a class of quadric surfaces from 3D data is presented. The technique is driven by a linear least-squaresbased fitting mechanism. Previously, such fitting was restricted to recovery of central quadrics; here, extension of that basic mechanism to allow recovery of one commonly-occurring class of non-central quadric, the elliptic paraboloids, is described. The extens...

A method for parametrizing discrete points sampled from a smooth shape and fitting a rational Gaussian surface to the points with a required accuracy is presented. With the proposed method, a very complex shape can be represented by a single surface, and the surface can be rendered at a desired level of detail by adjusting a smoothness parameter.

A method based on graph theory is investigated for creating global parametrizations for surface triangulations for the purpose of smooth surface fitting. The parametrizations, which are planar triangulations, are the solutions of linear systems based on convex combinations. A particular parametrization, called shape-preserving, is found to lead to visually smooth surface approximations.

Given a surface in 3-space or scattered points from a surface, we present algorithms for fitting the data by a surface which can be generated by a one–parameter subgroup of the group of similarities. These surfaces are general cones and cylinders, surfaces of revolution, helical surfaces and spiral surfaces.

In this work we address the question of how to exploit typical architectural structures to improve accuracy for CAD modeling of built environments from 3D data. In doing so we have examined the applicability of the GENOCOP III algorithm to the model fitting. The algorithm uses explicit domain knowledge, specifically geometric constraints in the form of parameterized surface models and an Euclid...

Ellipsoid fitting is a widely used technique in 3D shape modeling, which simultaneously estimate the center and orientation of 3D object. This paper explores the limits of performance for the ellipsoid-fitting center estimator. It is shown that the noise in the surface sample data can be approximated by a Gaussian distribution when the signal to noise ratio is high. The Cramér-Rao lower bound i...

In this study, asphaltene deposition from crude oil has experimentally and theoretically been studied using a test loop and an accurate temperature monitoring during a laminar flow. The effects of oil velocity and surface temperature on the thickness of asphaltene deposition were investigated. The results show that asphaltene deposition thickness increases by increasing surface temperature. As ...

Point clouds as measurements of 3D sensors have many applications in various fields such as object modeling, environment mapping and surface representation. Storage and processing of raw point clouds is time consuming and computationally expensive. In addition, their high dimensionality shall be considered, which results in the well known curse of dimensionality. Conventional methods either app...
