Hypersensitivity vasculitis (HSV) has been used to describe several forms of vasculitis of small blood vessels, including Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP), mixed cryoglobulinemia, and allergic vasculitis, etc. HSP is a disease occasionally seen in childhood, and is characterized by dermatological and abdominal symptoms. Here, we report a rare case of HSV which showed a clinical course similar to ...

INTRODUCTION Respiratory tract infections are one of the most common human infections in all age group and important cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Most bacterial upper respiratory tract infections are vaccine preventable. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of carrier state of bacterial upper respiratory tract pathogens among school children. It also aimed to study their ...

A novel series of 11,12-cyclic carbonate azithromycin-3-O-descladinosyl-3-O-carbamoyl glycosyl derivatives were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for their antibacterial activities in vitro. Most of these compounds had significant antibacterial activity against seven kinds of susceptible strains. In particular, compound G1 exhibited the most potent activity against methicillin-resistant Stre...

The aim of this work was to study and compare macrolide resistance patterns among Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus agalactiae and Streptococcus pyogenes, to describe the phenotypes of macrolide-lincosamide resistance and to further investigate associations between macrolide resistance and social clustering. Susceptibility data were obtained from 4 clinical microbiology laboratories in Ba...

There has been increasing global interest in Streptococcus pneumoniae in recent years because of the emergence of penicillin resistance in this organism. Although the most common manifestation of the organism is with respiratory infection, it can cause meningitis and septicemia3 Pneumococcal sepsis in the newborn period is however rare and only sporadic cases have been described from several ce...

We have designed a universal PCR capable of amplifying a portion of the 16S rRNA gene of eubacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus faecalis, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Legionella pneumophila, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Serratia marcescens, ...

Streptococcus mitis is the closest relative of the major human pathogen S. pneumoniae. The 2,15 Mb sequence of the Streptococcus mitis B6 chromosome, an unusually high-level beta-lactam resistant and multiple antibiotic resistant strain, has now been determined to encode 2100 genes. The accessory genome is estimated to represent over 40%, including 75 mostly novel transposases and IS, the proph...

Lower respiratory tract infections represent a major concern, especially with increasing numbers of resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae, extended-spectrum plactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae, and Staphylococcus aureus with reduced susceptibility to vancomycin. Here, we report on the susceptibilities of isolates cultured from patients with lower respiratory tract infection to different antibi...

Streptococcus pneumoniae is the major cause of bacterial meningitis. We report a case of meningitis due to a mixed infection with two distinct strains of S. pneumoniae: one penicillin-resistant strain of serotype 9V and one penicillin-susceptible strain of serotype 7. The two strains exhibited different pulsed-field gel electrophoresis profiles.

Nasopharyngeal transmission of Streptococcus pneumoniae was evaluated among 23 siblings with acute otitis media (AOM). Restriction fragment length polymorphism revealed that the nasopharyngeal strains were identical between siblings in 12 of 13 clusters of AOM experienced in 11 families. This study demonstrated person-to-person transmission of S. pneumoniae, especially drug-resistant strains, a...
