Norms are implemented by administrative procedures. This paper addresses the delegation of control in administrative procedures. Instead of having to check all details, a controlling actor can trust the data provided by other actors, provided they can demonstrate to be ‘in control’. In this paper we provide a conceptual analysis of situations in which control has been delegated. The approach is...

A C-metric algebra consists of a unital C-algebra and a Leibniz Lip-norm on the C-algebra. We show that if the Lip-norms concerned are lower semicontinuous, then any unital -homomorphism from a C-metric algebra to another one is necessarily Lipschitz. It results that the free product of two Lipschitz unital -homomorphisms between C-metric algebras coming from -filtrations is still a Lipschitz u...

This paper presents and discusses an approach to modelling the situation at the Abermule Train Station immediately leading up to the train disaster of 1921. The incident itself is summarised and a modelling approach introduced and presented that is based on the principles behind Empirical Modelling (EM) and yet also around the notion of tasks. A corresponding model, built with EM software tools...

In this paper and its sequel, we prove that injective homomorphisms between Teichmüller modular groups of compact orientable surfaces are necessarily isomorphisms, if an appropriately measured “size” of the surfaces in question differs by at most one. In particular, we establish the co-Hopfian property for modular groups of surfaces of positive genus.

The objective in this paper is to present a framework for a system that describes objects in a qualitative fashion. A subset of spatial prepositions is chosen and an appropriate quantiication is applied to each of them that capture their inherent qualitative properties. The quantiications use such object attributes as area, centers, and elonga-tion properties. The familiar zeroth, rst, and seco...

One approach to characterizing the elusive notion of emergence is to define that a property is emergent if and only if its presence can be derived but only by simulation. In this paper I investigate the pros and cons of this approach, focusing in particular on whether an appropriately distinct boundary can be drawn between simulation-based and non-simulation-based methods. I also examine the im...

Backchannels play an important role in spoken dialogue, especially in attentive listening such as counseling. Appropriately coordinated backchannels help establish rapport in that kind of dialogue. We investigate whether and how synchrony is expressed by the prosodic features of backchannels with respect to the preceding speaker’s utterances. By analyzing counseling dialogue, we find out correl...

We compare the determinants of individual giving between two countries, Spain and the US, which differ in their redistribution policies and their beliefs over the causes of poverty. By varying the information about the determinants of income, we find that, although overall giving is similar in both countries when subjects know the actual role of luck and effort, Spanish subjects give more when ...

We describe an experiment carried out using a French version of CALL-SLT, a web-enabled CALL game in which students at each turn are prompted to give a semi-free spoken response which the system then either accepts or rejects. The central question we investigate is whether the response is appropriate; we do this by extracting pairs of utterances where both members of the pair are responses by t...

We study heterogeneous interactions in a time-continuous bounded confidence model for opinion formation. The key new modelling aspects are to distinguish between open-minded and closed-minded behaviour and to include an open-mindedness social norm. The investigations focus on the equilibria supported by the proposed new model; particular attention is given to a novel class of equilibria consist...
