This paper describes a lab-scale simulated scrubber that was designed and built in the laboratory at Western Kentucky University’s Institute for Combustion Science and Environmental Technology. A series of tests on slurries of CaO, CaSO3, CaSO4/CaSO3 and Na2SO3 were carried out to simulate recirculating slurries in different oxidation modes. Elemental mercury (Hg) re-emission was replicated thr...

Slurry ice is a biphasic system consisting of small spherical ice crystals surrounded by seawater at subzero temperature. Its employment was evaluated in the present work as a new chilled storage method for whole horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) and compared with traditional flake icing. Different chemical analyses (nucleotide degradation, lipid hydrolysis and oxidation, interaction compoun...

In a ®eld trial (1985±1996) on a sandy loam soil the effects of tractor traf®c and fertilisation on earthworm populations were investigated. The tractor traf®c treatments compared normal farm practice (`normal') with reduced tractor traf®c (`low'). In the fertilisation treatments, three different cattle-manure management methods were compared. The cattle manure was applied as diluted slurry, as...

People have long been fascinated by bubbles and foams dynamics, and since the pioneer work of Leonardo da Vinci in the early 16th century, this subject has generated a huge bibliography. However, only very recently, much interest was devoted to bubbles in champagne wines [1]. Small bubbles rising through the liquid, as well as a bubble ring (the so-called collar) at the periphery of a flute pou...

Evaporative cooling is able to generate the cooling medium at a temperature approaching to the ambient wet bulb temperature. In this paper, a low-energy air conditioning strategy is proposed, which is a combination of cooled ceiling (CC), microencapsulated phase change material (MPCM) slurry storage and evaporative cooling technologies. The assessment of evaporative cooling availability and uti...

Ruminant husbandry constitutes the most important source of anthropogenic methane (CH4). In addition to enteric (animal-derived) CH4, excreta are another source of CH4, especially when stored anaerobically. Increasing the proportion of dietary concentrate is often considered as the primary CH4 mitigation option. However, it is unclear whether this is still valid when diets to be compared are en...

Significant recovery after treatment with the whole plant slurry of A.longifolia Nees. was observed in plasma AST, ALT and cholesterol levels in CCl4 induced hepatotoxic rats. This was amply supported by electron micrographs, which indicated normalization of cytoarchitecture of mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. The results suggest that the slurry of the plant is useful as a liver tonic.

A Prussian blue (PB) biosensor chip with the nanocubic crystals was fabricated in batch by a screen printing technique for the general detection of various physiological substances. Through a low-speed chemical synthesis approach, the nanostructure of PB slurry was well controlled to be a 100 nm nanocube by the synthesis temperature and reactant concentration. Then, PB slurry was screen-printed...

A pilot-scale bioslurry system was used to test the treatment of soils highly contaminated with 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) and 2,6-dinitrotoluene (2,6-DNT). The treatment scheme involved a soil-washing process followed by two sequential aerobic slurry reactors augmented with 2,4-DNT- and 2,6-DNT-mineralizing bacteria. Test soils were obtained from two former army ammunition plants, the Volunt...
