Whether the 3D incompressible Euler equations can develop a singularity in finite time from smooth initial data is one of the most challenging problems in mathematical fluid dynamics. This work attempts to provide an affirmative answer to this long-standing open question from a numerical point of view, by presenting a class of potentially singular solutions to the Euler equations computed in ax...

Mass of singularity is defined, and its relation to whether the singularity is spacelike, timelike or null is discussed for spherically symmetric spacetimes. It is shown that if the mass of singularity is positive (negative) the singularity is non-timelike (non-spacelike). The connection between the sign of the mass and the force on a particle is also discussed.

Fundamental theories of quantum gravity such as supergravity include a four form field strength which contributes to the cosmological constant. The inclusion of such a field into our theory of open inflation [1] allows an anthropic solution to the cosmological constant problem in which cosmological constant gives a small but non-negligible contribution to the density of today's universe. We inc...

this paper is a slightly revised version of an introduction into singularity theory corresponding to a series of lectures given at the ``advanced school and conference on homological and geometrical methods in representation theory'' at the international centre for theoretical physics (ictp), miramare - trieste, italy, 11-29 january 2010. we show how to associate to a triple of positive integer...

The paper is concerned with the Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) equations of multidimensional space variables with convex initial data and general Hamiltonians. Using Hopf’s formula (II), we will study the differentiability of the HJ solutions. For any given point,we give a sufficient and necessary condition such that the solutions are Ck smooth in some neighborhood of this point. We also study the charac...

We consider the possibility of using locally supported quasi-interpolation operators for the approximation of univariate non-smooth functions. In such a case one usually expects the rate of approximation to be lower than that of smooth functions. It is shown in this paper that prior knowledge of the type of ’singularity’ of the function can be used to regain the full approximation power of the ...

Together with generalized self-similarity and the fractal spectrum, local singularity analysis has been introduced as one part of the new 3S principle and technique for mineral resource assessment based on multifractal modeling, which has been demonstrated to be useful for anomaly delineation. Local singularity is used in this paper to characterize the property of multifractal distribution patt...
