High-energy phosphate metabolism and energy liberated as heat and work were measured in 3-s tetani of frog sartorius muscle at 0 degree C. Two contraction periods were studied: (a) a 0.35-s period of shortening near half-maximum velocity beginning after 2 s of isometric stimulation, and (b) a 0.65-s isometric period immediately following the shortening. There were no significant changes in leve...

Applying a small stretch to active muscle immediately before shortening results in an increase in force and work done during subsequent shortening. The basis of the increase is not fully understood, having important implications for work and efficiency, and how they are influenced through stretch. We used the anterior tibialis muscle of leopard frogs (Rana pipiens complex) to measure the oxygen...

In this chapter and the next we discuss the curve shortening flow (CSF). A number of important techniques in the field of geometric flows exhibit themselves in the curve shortening flow in an elegant and less technical way. The CSF was proposed in 1956 by Mullins to model the motion of idealized grain boundaries. In 1978 Brakke studied the mean curvature flow, of which the CSF is the 1-dimensio...

Z-plasty is used to lengthen scars and wounds. We describe the use of a modified technique to shorten wounds in ten consecutive patients undergoing acute shortening of a limb as part of an Ilizarov procedure. The modified technique gave good exposure, easy closure of the wound and fewer problems with healing than standard incisions.

Recently we reported that Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)-positive immune cells of unknown identity were responsible for the LPS-induced depression of cardiac myocyte shortening. The aim of this study is to identify the TLR4-positive cell type that is responsible for the LPS-induced cardiac dysfunction. Neither neutrophil depletion alone nor mast cell deficiency had any impact on the impairment of ...

We studied the effects of coronary occlusion and of subsequent ouabain administration on regional myocardial function, flow, and electrograms in 14 conscious dogs. Coronary occlusion resulted in a graded loss of regional function as reflected by measurements of segment length (SL), velocity of SL shortening and myocardial "work" from the normal to severely ischemic zones, along with graded flow...

We analyzed local longitudinal shortening by combining concurrent ultrasonography and manometry with basic principles of mechanics. We applied the law of mass conservation to quantify local axial shortening of the esophageal wall from ultrasonically measured cross-sectional area concurrently with measured intraluminal pressure, from which correlations between local contraction of longitudinal a...

To determine the effects of prolonged exercise on systolic and diastolic left ventricular function, we studied 21 athletes before, at the finish (within 11 +/- 5 min), and during recovery (28 +/- 9 hr) after the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run). Two-dimensionally guided M mode echocardiograms were digitized for wall thickness, cavity dimension, fractional s...

Evidence accumulates that telomere shortening reflects lifestyle and predicts remaining lifespan, but little is known of telomere dynamics and their relation to survival under natural conditions. We present longitudinal telomere data in free-living jackdaws (Corvus monedula) and test hypotheses on telomere shortening and survival. Telomeres in erythrocytes were measured using pulsed-field gel e...
