Background. In recent years in Philadelphia, shigellosis has shifted from a disease primarily affecting children and women of childbearing age to one that more commonly affects males ≥13 years of age. Studies of similar shifts in other U.S. cities have concluded that increased incidence among adult males may result from outbreaks among men who have sex with men (MSM). Antibiotic resistance amon...

Shigella is a major cause of morbidity, mortality, and growth retardation for children in developing countries. Emergence of antibiotic resistance among Shigellae demands the development of effective medicines. Previous studies found that the endogenous antimicrobial peptide LL-37 is down-regulated in the rectal epithelium of patients during shigellosis and that butyrate up-regulates the expres...

Genital prolapse in the newborn is a rare clinical condition often times seen in association with congenital myelo-meningocele, or this could occur following shigellosis infection. We therefore report two neonates with rectal prolapse following diarrhea and utero-vaginal prolapse associated with congenital spinal bifida.

Microbiology workers were most affected, but at least six infections were not attributable to work. All cases recovered.

An investigation of two Shigella sonnei shigellosis outbreaks that occurred in a communal settlement indicated that the transmission of the pathogen was restricted to day-care classes and secondary infection of family members was minimal. Development of serotype-specific immunity following S. sonnei infection was observed among infected children.
