We give lower bounds for the lifespan of a solution to the inviscid Boussinesq system. In dimension two, we point out that it tends to infinity when the initial (relative) temperature tends to zero. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first result of this kind for the inviscid Boussinesq system. In passing, we provide continuation criteria (of independent interest) in the N -dimensional ...

[1] Based on a literature overview, this paper summarizes the impact and legacy of the contributions of Wilfried Brutsaert and Jean-Yves Parlange (Cornell University) with respect to the current state-of-the-art understanding in hydraulic groundwater theory. Forming the basis of many applications in catchment hydrology, ranging from drought flow analysis to surface water-groundwater interaction...

The disordered Bose Hubbard model is studied numerically within the Bogoliubov approximation. First, the spatially varying condensate wavefunction in the presence of disorder is found by solving a nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Using the Bogoliubov approximation to find the excitations above this condensate, we calculate the condensate fraction, superfluid density, and density of states for a ...

We develop a robust Christov–Galerkin spectral technique for computing interacting localized wave solutions of and fourth and sixth-order generalized wave equations. To this end, a special complete orthonormal system of functions in Lð 1;1Þ is used whose rate of convergence is shown to be exponential for the cases under consideration. For the time-stepping, an implicit algorithm is chosen which...

We study the effects of severe non-Boussinesq conditions on thermal convection at the moderate Rayleigh numbers of Ra = 2× 108 and 2× 109 by resorting to direct numerical computations of the full governing equations. We illustrate the effects by considering low temperature gaseous helium. The properties of helium are allowed to depend on the temperature around the mean of 5.4K. The Nusselt numb...

An analytical solution of the Boussinesq equations for the motion of a viscous stably stratified fluid driven by a surface thermal forcing with large horizontal gradients (step changes) is obtained. This analytical solution is one of the few available for wall-bounded buoyancy-driven flows. The solution can be used to verify that computer codes for Boussinesq fluid system simulations are free o...

We study the asymptotic behavior of classical solutions to an initial-boundary value problem (IBVP) for a coupled Cahn-Hilliard-Boussinesq system on bounded domains with large initial data. A sufficient condition is established under which the solutions decay exponentially to constant states as time approaches infinity.

In this Letter, we present the third kind of Darboux transformation of the classical Boussinesq system, and discuss its relationship with the two basic Darboux transformations. By applying the Darboux transformations, we obtain the solutions of multiple soliton interactions, including overtaking and head-on collisions.  2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

We consider in this paper the well-posedness for the Cauchy problem associated to two-dimensional dispersive systems of Boussinesq type which model weakly nonlinear long wave surface waves. We emphasize the case of the strongly dispersive ones with focus on the “KdV-KdV” system which possesses the strongest dispersive properties and which is a vector two-dimensional extension of the classical K...

We consider an optimal control problem governed by a system of nonlinear partial differential equations modelling viscous incompressible flows submitted to variations of temperature. We use a generalized Boussinesq approximation. We obtain the existence of the optimal control as well as first order optimality conditions of Pontryagin type by using the Dubovitskii-Milyutin formalism.
