We investigate an extension of the Perard and Bishop (PB) model. In the studied model we get a harmonic one dimensional lattice chain with an additional Morse potential on site. The rotation and vibration motion of each component of the lattice are considered and the coupling for these motions is introduced by a resonance condition. Thermodynamics and structural properties of the system are exp...

Multiple vibrational mode coupling that induces the missing mode effect and Duschinsky rotation on the potential energy surface of the S(1) state in the Cy3 molecule was clarified by real-time ultrafast spectroscopy with a few-cycle laser pulse. The contributions of homogeneous and inhomogeneous dephasing to the total dephasing time were found to be 55% and 45%, respectively.

We show that backflow, the coupling between the order parameter and the velocity fields, has a significant effect on the motion of defects in nematic liquid crystals. In particular, the defect speed can depend strongly on the topological strength in two dimensions and on the sense of rotation of the director about the core in three dimensions.

Acceleration-induced nonlocality is discussed and a simple field theory of nonlocal electrodynamics is developed. The theory involves a pair of real parameters that are to be determined from observation. The implications of this theory for the phenomenon of helicity-rotation coupling are briefly examined.

We consider discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators on the whole line and establish a criterion for continuity of spectral measures with respect to log-Hausdorff measures. We apply this result to operators with Sturmian potentials and thereby prove logarithmic quantum dynamical lower bounds for all coupling constants and almost all rotation numbers, uniformly in the phase.

The general continuum free energy is derived for a liquid crystalline (smectic) elastomer under small strain and orientational distortion. Using group representation theory we obtain all invariants describing the coupling of translational and orientational degrees of freedom. Possibilities of uniform rotation of the layer system under shear deformation are outlined. It is shown that in centrosy...

Despite extensive surveys of extragalactic TeV gamma-ray candidates only 3 sources have so far been detected. All three are northern hemisphere objects and all three are low-redshift X-ray selected BL Lacs (XBLs). In this paper we present the results of observations of the three nearest southern hemisphere XBLs (PKS0548−322, PKS2005−489 and PKS2155−304) with the CANGAROO 3.8m imaging telescope....

Yet each in itself – this was the uncanny, the antiorganic, the life-denying character of them all – each of them was absolutely symmetrical, icily regular in form. They were too regular, as substance adapted to life never was to this degree – the living principle shuddered at this perfect precision, found it deathly, the very marrow of death – Hans Castorp felt he understood now the reason why...

Molecular motors involved in the packaging of DNA in tailed viruses are among the strongest known. The mechanism by which the motors operate has long been speculated to involve a coupling between rotation of the portal pore (the gate through which DNA passes upon its packaging or ejection), and translation of DNA. Recent experimental evidence rules out portal rotation with a substantial degree ...

Recently in RFX, where wall locked modes were always present, a new technique has demonstrated the possibility to induce a continuous rotation of the modes with respect to the wall. In this technique the non-linear coupling of the m=0 and m=1 modes has been used to decouple the modes themselves. In the present experiments the mode rotation is induced with a preprogrammed waveform of a toroidal ...
