Traditionally database design has been taught using Entity Relationship (ER) modelling. In this paper we set out some of the problems that learners experience with the ER approach. We argue that Object Role Modelling (ORM), a design method taught at the University of Wolverhampton helps overcome these problems.

The paper focuses on role engineering which is an important topic in the development of access control system, particularly when considering Role Based Access Control – RBAC models. Despite the wide use of RBAC in various applications, the role engineering process is not a standardized approach. The paper aims to define a methodology and a process model for role engineering.

We propose to unify a variety of existing semantic classification tasks, such as semantic role labeling, anaphora resolution, and paraphrase detection, under the heading of Recognizing Textual Entailment (RTE). We present a general strategy to automatically generate one or more sentential hypotheses based on an input sentence and pre-existing manual semantic annotations. The resulting suite of ...

Semantic role labeling (SRL) identifies the predicate-argument structure in text with semantic labels. It plays a key role in understanding natural language. In this paper, we present POLYGLOT, a multilingual semantic role labeling system capable of semantically parsing sentences in 9 different languages from 4 different language groups. The core of POLYGLOT are SRL models for individual langua...

In the ITEA2 Do-It-Yourself Smart Experiences project (DIY-SE), we are required to design an ontology-based ambient computing environment to support users to DIY their personalized solutions. In this paper, we illustrate how to manage data semantics using Semantic Decision Table (SDT). We use a simple rule writing language called Decision Commitment Language (DECOL) to store the SDT commitments...

Online gaming has become one of the most popular forms of online leisure activity today. Massively multiplayer online game (MMOG), being highly persistent and immersive, is however often presented as being potentially dangerous of leading to problematic use. Despite a rising concern over this emerging societal challenge, the theoretical understanding of problematic use of MMOG is lacking in the...

Object-Role Modeling (ORM) is a method for modeling and querying an information system at the conceptual level, and mapping between conceptual and logical (e.g. relational) levels. ORM comes in various flavors, including NIAM (Natural language Information Analysis Method). This article provides an overview of ORM, and notes its advantages over Entity Relationship and traditional Object-Oriented...

In this paper we use Object-Role Modeling (ORM) to complement System Dynamics (SD). The art of SD modeling lies in discovering and representing feedback processes and other elements that determine the dynamics of the system. However, SD shows a lack of instruments for discovering and expressing precise, language-based concepts in domains. At the same time, the field of conceptual modeling has l...

Subtyping is an important feature of semantic approaches to conceptual schema design and, more recently, object-oriented database design. However the relational model does not directly support subtyping, and CASE tools for mapping conceptual to relational schemas typically provide only very weak support for mapping subtypes. This paper surveys some of the main issues related to conceptual speci...

Previous work comparing fMRI data for two participants participating in a trust game provides a unique source for the development of an ACT-R model of trust. The model replicates a large portion of the behavior data. Continuing efforts expect to match more of the behavioral data and the imaging data comparison is expected to identify architectural needs.
