most contemporary clinical reasoning tests typically assess non-automatic thinking. therefore, a test is needed to measure automatic reasoning or pattern recognition, which has been largely neglected in clinical reasoning tests. the puzzle test (pt) is dedicated to assess automatic clinical reasoning in routine situations. this test has been introduced first in 2009 by monajemi et al in the oly...
Repeated testing during learning often improves later memory, which is often referred to as the testing effect. To clarify its boundary conditions, we examined whether the testing effect was selectively affected by covert (retrieved but not articulated) or overt (retrieved and articulated) response format. In Experiments 1 and 2, we compared immediate (5 min) and delayed (1 week) cued recall fo...
Poorly controlled co-morbidities associated with pediatric chronic kidney disease may be associated with low health literacy skills of caregivers. This article explores what is known about health literacy in the home management of patients with pediatric chronic kidney disease, and examines caregiver and child literacy as it relates to child health outcomes.
Patients on hemodialysis have a high incidence of cardiac morbidity and mortality, and echocardiographic evidence of hemodialysis-related myocardial stunning supports a potential link between the hemodialysis treatment itself and cardiac sequelae. Fluid removal rates exceeding 13 mL/kg/hour during hemodialysis have been implicated in the development of myocardial stunning. Providers caring for ...

Isothermal hemodialysis to improve intradialytic tolerance in hypotension-prone patients has been effective in outpatient settings. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine thermal control in an acute care setting and describe comfort issues associated with thermal control. Although complaints of cold or shivering occurred more frequently with the isothermal hemodialysis group, cold disco...
Long-term central venous catheter (CVC) use among patients on hemodialysis increases the risk of infection, morbidity, and mortality. This article describes the use of Kotter’s process of change to establish a multidisciplinary vascular access team to facilitate the replacement of CVCs with long-term accesses. Through the implementation of vascular access teams and the execution of Kotter’s eig...
Preventable errors are a major issue in health care. The complexity of health care requires interactions among numerous providers for any patient multiple times a day. Nurses are the constant presence with patients and have an important role in coordinating the contributions of the myriad of caregivers. Nurses are also the last line of defense. This pilot project aimed to improve knowledge and self-management among Medicaid beneficiaries with Stage 3b and 4 chronic kidney disease who were identified using a populationbased approach. Participants received up to six in-person educational sessions delivered by a nurse practitioner. Increases in knowledge and self-reported behavior changes were generally observed among participants.
