A surface adlayer is generated on organic single crystals (tetracene and rubrene) using the site specific Diels-Alder reaction and a series of vapor phase dienophiles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirms adsorption on the surfaces of tetracene and rubrene and mass spectrometry demonstrates the reaction's applicability to a range of dienophiles.

Mass size distributions of ambient aerosol were measured in Zabrze, a heavily industrialized city of Poland, during a summer and a winter season. The chemical analyses of the surface layer of PM(10), PM(2.5) and PM(1) in this area were also performed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Results suggested that the influence of an atmospheric aerosol on the health condition of Zabrze reside...

This paper investigates the reactivity of elemental carbon films deposited from the vapor phase with Fe and Ni substrates at room temperature. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements are presented as a method for evaluating kinetic reaction data. Carbon films are deposited on different surface orientations representing geometries from a dense atom packing as in fcc (111) to an open ...

The effect of nonadiabatic annealing on poly(3,4-ethylendioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT-PSS) thin films prepared on silicon substrate has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The analysis indicates the formation of an annealing-induced doping in PEDOT structure, suggesting a modification of the polymer ...

A set of hexasubstituted benzene derivatives with three thiol groups in the 1, 3, 5 positions and varied aliphatic substituents in the 2, 4, 6 positions (Me3-BTMT, Et3-BTMT, ODe3-BTMT) has been synthesized and self-assembled on Au(111). The resulting self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochem...

Room temperature ferromagnetism (RTF) is observed in pure copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles which were prepared by precipitation method with the post-annealing in air without any ferromagnetic dopant. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) result indicates that the mixture valence states of Cu1+ and Cu2+ ions exist at the surface of the particles. Vacuum annealing enhances the ferromagnetism (FM...

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold derived from the direct adsorption of thioacetic acid S-decyl ester (C10SAc) and thioacetic acid S-octadecyl ester (C18SAc) were compared to the corresponding SAMs derived from the analogous adsorption n-decanethiol (C10SH) and n-octadecanethiol (C18SH). All SAMs were characterized using ellipsometry, contact angle goniometry, polarization modulation inf...

The nature of the surface formed by a saturated layer (8(NO) = 1.0) of NO on a Mo(100) surface at 150 K has been determined by using both angle-resolved ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and the angular variation of near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS). Photoelectron spectroscopy indicates that NO can adsorb molecularly at this temperature but that a portion of the NO is also...

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is used to probe the photoinduced shifts in the binding energies of Si2p, O1s, and C1s of the SiO2/Si interfaces of a number of samples having oxide and/or thin organic layers on top of p- and n-Si wafers. Whereas the photoinduced shifts, in each and every peak related, vary from 0.2 to 0.5 eV for the p-type samples, the corresponding shifts are substantially sm...

In situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and low-energy ion scattering were used to study the preparation, (thermo)chemical and catalytic properties of 1:1 PdGa intermetallic near-surface phases. Deposition of several multilayers of Ga metal and subsequent annealing to 503-523 K led to the formation of a multi-layered 1:1 PdGa near-surface state without desorption of excess Ga to the gas phase....
