The dynamic problems of a microactuator with a single edge crack are numerically formulated using radial basis functions. The microactuator model incorporates the taper ratio, electrode shapes, and crack length, all of which govern the dynamic behavior of microactuators. To optimize the design of a microactuator, many characteristics of various shaped cantilevers and curved electrodes are also ...

OBJECTIVE The tendons of the extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis muscles are quite useful in tendon transfer, such as in correction of finger clawing and restoration of thumb opposition. Knowledge of additional radial wrist extensor muscle bellies with independent tendons is useful in the above-mentioned surgical procedures. METHODS The skin, subcutaneous tissue, and antebrachial fascia...

Rats use active, rhythmic movements of their whiskers to acquire tactile information about three-dimensional object features. There are no receptors along the length of the whisker; therefore all tactile information must be mechanically transduced back to receptors at the whisker base. This raises the question: how might the rat determine the radial contact position of an object along the whisk...

The growth kinetics of Aspergillus nidulans, Mucor hiemalis and Penicillium chrysogenum on solid media and in submerged culture were studied. Growth of A. nidulans colonies on solid medium can be divided into the four phases of lag, exponential, deceleration and constant growth rate. The growth kinetics of A. nidulans in submerged culture were similar to those commonly found for unicellular mic...

INTRODUCTION The constraint of constant volume for a contracting muscle cell implies a radial expansion that occurs during axial shortening will lead to increases in the radial spacing of the lattice of myofilaments. That change in filament spacing, in turn, can have a profound effect on the attachment rate of crossbridges [1]. At the same time, cross-bridges attaching to thin filaments and gen...

Thesis for the degree of Doctor of Science (Technology) to be presented with due permission for public examination and criticism in the auditorium 1382 at Lappeenranta ABSTRACT Asko Parviainen This thesis presents an alternative approach to the analytical design of surface-mounted axial-flux permanent-magnet machines. Emphasis has been placed on the design of axial-flux machines with a one-roto...

Pecten dijkstrai n. sp. is described from several localities in northern Western Australia. It represents a new, rare example of a tropical member of the genus Pecten. The new species most closely resembles P. excavatus Anton, 1838, previously reported from southern Japan to Indonesia, differing in its smaller size, greater length (antero-posterior dimension), more numerous, lower radial costae...

We report 21 cases of stress injury of the distal radial growth plate-occurring in gymnasts before skeletal maturity. The injury appears to be caused by inability of the growth plate to withstand rotational and compressive forces. Our observations have confirmed that the skeletal age of gymnasts is retarded, which increases the length of time during which the epiphysis is at risk of damage.

Total arterial revascularization in patients with three-vessel disease cannot usually be achieved by bilateral internal thoracic artery grafts alone due to limited length. In this report we describe a technique by which the right internal thoracic artery can be elongated with radial artery for sequential grafting in redo total arterial revascularization procedure.

Fiber diameter, radial distribution of density, and radius of gyration were determined from scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) of unstained, frozen-dried chromatin fibers. Chromatin fibers isolated under physiological conditions (ionic strength, 124 mM) from Thyone briareus sperm (DNA linker length, n = 87 bp) and Necturus maculosus erythrocytes (n = 48 bp) were analyzed by object...
